the lunch thread

Wow, did you finish it?

Actually, I didn't have one of those the other day. I've had it before but I split it into tow meals.
We were talking about it yesterday and I thought of this thread so I posted the picture. It's at a place called Alice Cooperstown which is owned by Alice Cooper.

That's not big, well it is big, but it's not clever. Please don't do that again.

Not clever, but damn tasty and the beer that came along with it was cold and tasty as well.

cheese enchilada w/ mild sauce

I saw that restaurant featured in one of Anthony Bourdain's shows I think.

There was a new Vietnamese Banh Mi place that opened at the mall near my house and they had a 2 for 1 sandwich special over the weekend so I went for it. The lemongrass pork ban mi is pretty good. I think I'll buy more of those for dinner. :D

I love those and love Pho as well. You should try it if you haven't had it.

I just can't get excited over a new kind of sandwich any more. A sandwich is a sandwich is a sandwich in my book. Pork seasoned with lemongrass (and probably chilli, garlic and galangal too) is a nice thing, but why stuff it into a French-style baguette? Serve it over jasmine or sticky rice with a papaya salad on the side. Now I'm getting interested.

Every year I look forward to the first harvest of tomatoes from the garden. Anymore, I garden to put up salsas, a variety of hot and mild peppers and tomatoes. When I get done picking, cleaning and sorting, I find just the right one, slice it thin and make a tomato sandwich on toast with mayo and fresh ground pepper. Best sandwich till next year.

I think the bread gets in the way of great flavours, unless it is outstanding artisan or homemade bread, and even then...

...slice the toms really finely, slice some cucumber really finely, tear up a few fresh basil leaves and season with good balsamic vinegar, EVOO, salt and freshly ground black pepper, sprinkle over the toms and cuke and enjoy sans carbs.

Add fresh mozzarella, and now we're talking.

I'm hungry, I think it's lunch time. Somewhere.

Good idea, or perhaps something a bit more flavourful, like Époisse, Cabrales or a creamy Gorgonzola. Mind you, any cheese might distract a bit from the toms, if they are that good.

Had mine already. Homemade pork and mushroom empanada with habas and jamón.

That's why I go mozzarella. It's mild, and blends real nice with the balsam vinegar.

I usually do and ask the cheesemonger to give me something with more flavour, like Monterrey Jack, or Edam.

Not a fan of Edam. Tastes similar to Swiss or jarlsburg, if I remember correctly. Not bad, but I wouldn't put it on a pizza. Monterrey is good stuff, I use that to make a good ham and cheese omelet.

Okay. That joke obviously didn't work. :doh

I mentioned those two because I think they are famous for being flavourless.

What's 'Swiss' btw? I like some Swiss cheeses very much, like Appenzeller and Vacherin.

Gruyère is one of my favorite Swiss. Over baked potato it is heavenly.

A Banh Mi is a unique sandwich that is one of the foundations of Vietnamese cuisine- it combines Asian and European influences into an awesome tasting meal. Dont knock it till you try it.

Here in the states, it's basically jarlsburg. We slice it thin, and put it on sandwiches.

We uh, don't really get a good selection of cheese.

1/2 BLT on pita w/ light mayo
ancient grains pretzel twists

Leftover steak taco and sweet tea for today's lunch.

Subway chicken sandwich with Pringles sour cream and onion potato chips.

Leftover rice and sausage and peppers and onions. Some Italian bread with butter. There are trays in the fridge with more of the same along with penne a la vodka and chicken picatta. As usual my wife ordered too much for our daughters grad party. Help! I can resist everything but temptation.
