The docs think that I may need cataract surgery. They say “ it’s only a small incision in your eye!” There is no such thing as a “small incision” in my eye! Have any of the senior members here had this procedure performed? It is said to be “outpatient surgery.” What can I expect?

You can expect them to be waking you and saying you're done. Had cataract surgery in both eyes in the past year. It is a couple hour procedure from the time you walk in until the time you walk out. You'll need a driver and your eyes will be super light sensitive for a while. Had my right eye done in mid october and it's still very light sensitive. Other than that, the difference is going to amaze you.

I've not but both my parents have...it's a breeze, the worst part is fiddlin' with the drops afterwards for weeks...

Really? Well, that's even better, no downside!

Yes really but the light sensitivity thing still is there. I still need to wear sunglasses most days. Also your eye will be sore for a couple weeks, try not to rub it the first few days.

Yeah, my dad wear his sunglasses a lot, even indoors...but he has blue eyes, I think that has something to do with it, because my step-mom's eyes are brown and she didn't have the sensitivity problem like he does...

It's a little like flying: most people fly these days, and the vast majority of the time it's not a problem. But can bad things happen occasionally, even with the best surgeons/pilots? Yes. It's not a haircut.

Could be, I have hazel eyes.

I know a couple people who had some nasty complications with theirs but they said the procedure itself was no big deal.

I had a lens replaced three years ago. It is nothing to worry about. I was in on a Monday for tests, then surgery on Tuesday, followed by a discharge from the hospital on Friday. Other people may not need to stay at the hospital, but since I had to travel far away to have it done, it was best. I stayed awake the entire time. The actual surgery, which moved me to three different stations, took about 45 minutes. When it was over, I could see out of that eye again once the lens was replaced. Stay calm, because the doctor knows what he is doing, fretting about it will only make his job harder. I had another doctor observing my surgery take a picture of the tv monitor that interns were observing.

I worked in the optical field and it's a mild and common procedure, nothing to worry over. They numb your eye with drops and use a device called a phacoemulsifier to remove your natural lens before replacing it. I have a cataract in my right eye. They develop at different speeds in everyone.

My grandmother had it done when she was in her 80's... She was out the same day, and her biggest pain in the butt were the drops she needed to take. I think you're going to be ok, bud... :) But I get it, the thought of anyone doing anything to anyone's eye has me bent over in cringe ridden sympathy pain...hehe... Good luck with it, and a speedy recovery.

Update: had the left eye done shortly after the OP. It was a bit daunting, but the anticipation was worse. The left is my weaker eye, so I went with that one first. Long story/short. I had better vision in that eye for about two days and then the vision returned to about what it was before surgery. I followed the drop regimen and had a couple of follow up visits. Ten months later, things haven’t changed except for the pandemic. The only difference is that colors are brighter. The procedure has been likened to cleaning foggy auto headlamps. Not sure how I am going to go forward with the right eye. They even uphold me to the super duper lens.

@bongsaway @Rexedgar @SayMyName @grip Since y'all know about this I have a question.

I have to get both eyes done and on Wednesday I need to pick lenses.

The choices:
Standard Monofocal IOL.
(Focused for distant or near).
Advanced Monofocal IOL. (Focused for distant or near).
Multifocal IOL

Did you go with Monofocal and if so did you go with distant or near focus?

Did any of you chose Multifocal?

Or anyone else who's been through this feel free to weigh in.

I'll be getting multifocal once I have my second eye done in the spring. I still need help with up close reading, etc., and I don't like taking readers on and off. Probably the far distance top of my glasses will be mostly plain glass. I can see so much better, even just having one done so far.

Thanks Mary.

Sorry--that really sucks!

There's some advice here on the different options.

Oh! They have bifocal implants? Who knew? I wondered why you needed to talk about glasses before the procedure.

I didn't get that choice. Never heard of it.
