Survey: 37 percent of Americans plan to skip flu vaccine this season | TheHill

Thirty-seven percent of American adults don't plan to get flu shots this season, according to a poll released Tuesday.

A survey conducted by NORC at the University of Chicago found those who don't plan to get shots have concerns about the side effects of the vaccine or think it doesn't work very well.

I wonder where these folks rank on the stupidometer.

People making their own choices with full understanding of the consequences are stupid?

I don't think these people have full understanding of the potential consequences of either catching or transmitting the flu. The level of education in health areas in this country is pretty poor,

And you know what? Politically speaking, many of these folks would otherwise be characterized as liberals; i.e., pro-science.

People are ultimately responsible for the choices they make. There's a lot about health you can't control, like what tendency toward disease you may have inherited. But there's more you can. There's not much anyone can do when someone's meal consists of a bag of potato chips, and never so much as get off the couch.

I turn 66 on Christmas Day, so in addition to the seasonal vaccines, I've gotten a few in the last year related to pneumonia, shingles, and hepatitis since I traveled to South America. No guarantees in life; the best you can do is follow the consensus.

I know old folks who do not get their flu shots because it hits them so hard that they are worried that they may be disabled or die from it, which I can hardly blame for. This is not necessarily people refusing their children getting their measles, mumps, rubella or whooping cough inoculations for fear of autism here.

I'm actually incredibly surprised the number is that low honestly. I'm not getting a flue shot this year. It's not because I'm scared of the side effects or think it's going to give me the flu or anything like that. I just don't think I really need it that badly. I can't even remember the last time I've gotten the flu and I've never had a flu shot. I don't work around children or the elderly. I don't have kids of my own or anything so I'm not super worried about getting it or giving it to someone else. Even if I myself ended up getting the flu it would suck, but as a 37 year old guy I'm not going to die from it or have any permanent damage from it.

I'm not telling anybody not to get it, the science is sound and there's nothing wrong with being safe. I just don't think the $25/year is worth it to me and I'm frankly surprised that 63% of American adults actually are going to get it.

Yes, people who make stupid choices for stupid reasons are by definition stupid. Just because you have a right to do something doesn't mean you're smart for doing it.

Yes, one only has to look at the government approved food pyramid to understand that the source of health education is sorely lacking.

I think people should make up their own minds regarding flu shots. Some do experience nasty side affects from the shot.

Just because you have a right to do something is really all that needs to be said. If you don’t like the choices some people make, get with your representatives to get them to pass laws making such behavior illegal.

Wow, how did you fit so much despicable garbage into such a small paragraph. Let's start with the second dumb sentence first...

You cannot force someone against their will to get a flu shot. That would be an egregious breach of someone's human rights. The best you could maybe do is restrict someone's access to certain places like schools and nursing homes if they choose not to get the shot, but the government cannot force someone to get it against their will entirely.

Just because you have a right to do something is really all that needs to be said.
No, it isn't. It's important to call stupid behavior out for being stupid if for absolutely no other reason that to help young people who don't understand differentiate. Take smoking. Technically it's legal and if you really want to smoke cigarettes you're free to do so, but it's important that everyone knows how ****ing stupid cigarettes are so that young people don't get tricked into think it'll make them cool.

If you want to start smoking you go right ahead, but I am free to call you an idiot if you do so. By the same token if you decide not to get a flu shot because you stupidly think it's going to give you the flu then you are stupid and I'm going to call you that. If you work with children, have small children or spend a lot of time around the elderly you should definitely get a flu shot. It's stupid of you not to do that.

I got my shot, and so did my wife and kiddo. I've had the flu a couple times, and it's scary as well as very uncomfortable and inconvenient. You literally can't work when you have it, and I wouldn't want to waste a week of my PTO on that.

Plenty of people still smoke and you may not have noticed, but there are a lot of laws restricting that behavior. I choose not to smoke, but there’s not much anyone can do to stop someone from making that choice. Calling them stupid will certainly sway them over to your position, I’m sure.

I didn’t say you could catch the flu from a flu shot, for **** sake. I said some people react badly to it. When I was in the military and required to get various vaccinations, I had a very bad reaction to one, I think it was a combo of diphtheria and a couple other things. No, I didn’t think I’d contracted diphtheria.

The government forces behavior all the time. Take your smoking example. When’s the last time you had to ask for the non-smoking section of a restaurant?

I'm with you. If I happen to get the flu oh well, a couple days rest in bed and hot soup. Some over the counter medicine to ease my pain and next week i'll be good as new. That's if I happen to get it which is like a 20% chance. The vaccine is not worth my time, money, or the prick in the arm.

I wonder if they've ever had the flu. i've have had it & it is terrible. And contagious.
