Brain-eating amoeba kills person who swam in North Carolina manmade lake

The CDC confirmed that the cause of the illness was Naegleria fowleri.

North Carolina health officials say a person has died from a rare brain-eating amoeba after swimming in a man-made lake at a water park.

The state Department of Health and Human Resources said in a news release Wednesday that the infection was caused by the amoeba naturally present in warm freshwater during the summer. The unnamed person became sick after swimming in Fantasy Lake Water Park in Cumberland County on July 12.

Reminds me of the Animal Planet TV series Monsters Inside Me, which highlights cases of severe illnesses brought on by strange & little known parasites & toxic substances. This is scary stuff if you can get infected simply by swimming in a public water body. See General Information

That is so horrible. People should be warned not to swim in non-treated water, even relatively "safe" bodies of water, whether a canal, a river or lake. Chlorinated water may burn eyes, but it damn well saves lives.

Apparently, one can drink the water and not be harmed. It's snorting it up the nose that the amoeba gets to the brain. There is no cure for it either.

Brutal.
I don't get the appeal of swimming in brown water.

It's safe to say that most Democrats in the House of Representatives have contracted it as they seem to be deranged mentally over Trump and now Mueller.

Some parasites, as seen recently on Monsters Inside Me, are resistant to chlorine in water. It takes ozone to kill them. I believe there was a massive outbreak of Cryptosporidium parvum in Milwaukee due to sewage leaking into the input of a water treatment plant that only used chlorine. See

Ha! Even the city folks aren't safe. Thanks, nature, very cool!

They can occur in lake or pond water. If you should happen to drink the water it will not cause you to get
sick. It's when the water enters your nose there is a very small possibility of becoming ill.
I think there have been something like 145 cases documented over time.

From the CDC

Parasites — Naegleria fowleri — Primary Amebic Meningoencephalitis (PAM) — Amebic Encephalitis

Naegleria fowleri is a free-living ameba that causes primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM), a disease of the central nervous system 1, 2. PAM is a rare disease* that is almost always fatal. In the United States**, there have been 145 PAM infections from 1962 through 2018 with only four survivors. These infections have primarily occurred in 15 southern-tier states, with more than half of all infections occurring in Texas and Florida. PAM also disproportionately affects males and children. The reason for this distribution pattern is unclear but may reflect the types of water activities (such as diving or watersports) that might be more common among young boys.

Reminds me of that TV show from a couple of years ago, Brain Dead, in which bugs crawled into the brains of politicians and made them hyper-partisan.

Oh for ****'s sake. And you guys accuse US of having rent free space in our heads for politicians?

Where do you live? Oh, I see you are libertarian left. They have amoebas over there too?:usflag2:

Can you say lawsuit?

You have more of a chance of being hit by lightning than dying from his amoeba.
