24 Charged in $1.2 Billion Medicare Scheme, U.S. Says - The New York Times

Federal officials said Tuesday that they had dismantled a $1.2 billion Medicare scheme that spanned continents and ensnared hundreds of thousands of unsuspecting elderly and disabled patients.

Under the scheme, which the authorities described as one of the largest health care frauds in United States history, doctors prescribed back, shoulder, wrist and knee braces that were not needed, prosecutors said. Twenty-four people were charged, according to the Justice Department.

It is likely we've all seen their ads on TV. 'Need a shoulder, back or knee brace? It costs you nothing thanks to Medicare.' A major teleswindle involving medical device manufacturers giving kickbacks to corrupt MDs.

Which is clearly why the answer to our healthcare system is Medicare for all

The penalties for this type of fraud need to be escalated so as to serve as more of a deterrent, imo.

1.2B? Billion??? Marone! Amazing!

Orrrr the PRIVATE sector Healthcare 'professionals' shouldn't be allowed to self regulate. It could use a bit more government oversight with realistic penalties for doctors and hospitals for turning a blind eye to fraud and malpractice.

Remember the opioid over prescription wasn't a medicare issue, pay-offs for pushing 'new' drugs isn't a medicare issue, obscene price hikes for vital and long available drugs isn't a medicare issue...

But ignore the big picture to beat your favorite drum.... :peace
