Trial Explores Use of Bempedoic Acid to Reduce LDL Cholesterol | MD Magazine
Trial Explores Use of Bempedoic Acid to Reduce LDL Cholesterol
A trial exploring the effects of bempedoic acid, combined with statin therapy, revealed noticeably decreased levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) without any apparent increase in danger to patients.
According to the international team of investigators to conduct the study, little is known about the long-term impacts of bempedoic acid as a treatment for elevated cholesterol levels in regard to both safety and efficacy. As such, outcomes for both benefits were assessed in the trial.
==============================================
The normal dosage range for a major statin, Lipitor (atorvastatin) maxes out at 80 mg/day. I once was on 80 mg of it & developed a severe & persistent pain in my upper left arm. This is a disease condition called rhabdomyelysis, which is a serious, degenerative muscle condition. Now I take 60 mg/day of Lipitor + 10 mg/day of Zetia, an older drug. The results have been to lower my total cholesterol to 195 & my LDL to 128, both numbers being in the 'good' range.
Many patients wuith high LDL have difficulty with high doses of statins due to this painful & dangerous side reaction. A new drug, bempedoic acid, helps block the biosynthesis of cholesterol in the body at a different step in its biosynthesis.
If it makes it to market, an estimate of its cost would be around $3,500/year.
