Trial Explores Use of Bempedoic Acid to Reduce LDL Cholesterol

A trial exploring the effects of bempedoic acid, combined with statin therapy, revealed noticeably decreased levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) without any apparent increase in danger to patients.

According to the international team of investigators to conduct the study, little is known about the long-term impacts of bempedoic acid as a treatment for elevated cholesterol levels in regard to both safety and efficacy. As such, outcomes for both benefits were assessed in the trial.
==============================================
The normal dosage range for a major statin, Lipitor (atorvastatin) maxes out at 80 mg/day. I once was on 80 mg of it & developed a severe & persistent pain in my upper left arm. This is a disease condition called rhabdomyelysis, which is a serious, degenerative muscle condition. Now I take 60 mg/day of Lipitor + 10 mg/day of Zetia, an older drug. The results have been to lower my total cholesterol to 195 & my LDL to 128, both numbers being in the 'good' range.

Many patients wuith high LDL have difficulty with high doses of statins due to this painful & dangerous side reaction. A new drug, bempedoic acid, helps block the biosynthesis of cholesterol in the body at a different step in its biosynthesis.

If it makes it to market, an estimate of its cost would be around $3,500/year.

Low impact exercise will be just as effective for most patients. Long walks when possible, or multiple short walks, swimming, horseback riding, and so forth, along with a quality diet of fresh greens, reasonable whole fiber carbs, nuts, and avoidance of foods high in trans fats. My total cholesterol rarely exceeds 130, my LDL about 45. I take no statins, and diet controls are less expensive than medications. Two meals per day are sufficient, with light snacking if hungry. Enough carbs to keep the heart happy, but not excessive, an orange or apple if blood sugars dip. Blood sugars are my problem, and keeping them low also assists lower cholesterol levels. It's more of a problem when my blood sugars are too low. I'm a 1/4" shy of 6', I peaked at about 215 18 months ago, now about 185. Weight control is crucial to both cholesterol and sugar levels. I'm 70 and find walking the dog is an immense help for getting me out the door and off my butt. I'd walk the parrot but he isn't interested. My horseback riding days are sadly over. Falling is a potential problem. A few sit ups and push ups in the morning doesn't hurt. If you can't do a few sit ups, you do have a problem.

People who ancestry stems from the British Isles have a higher than normal number of mutations in the receptor that scavenges HDL & LDL from the blood stream, which results in high cholesterol & atherosclerosis problems. Both of my parents had ancestry in the British Isles. I'm lucky that they finally figured out how to control my LDL.

I walk 1/2 mile each day with my wife. I also snack only on pistachio nuts.

Falling is a big problem for anyone over 70. We had an orthopedic bench installed in our bathtub as my balance is not what it was & falls in the tub are a common way older people break their hips, which is usually the gateway accident to dying in a nursing home. I also wear a medic alarm with a fall sensor. It is actually a cell phone, so if I'm conscious I can call them by pressing the big button. If I don't respond, they know where I am so they can direct medical services. They find too many dead older people lying in a puddle of their own urine on the bathroom floor.

More people die in bathrooms than in car accidents, but the problem isn't so much falling as too much time on the throne. Blood pressure drops precipitously and the individual can't rise, eventually feinting.

Not everyone over 70 has issues of balance or bone brittling. Those who spent their lives doing manual labor and exercise regimens suffer from both these problems far less than those who lived more sedentary lives. Lifestyle makes a difference. Before I turned 40, I worked out at least 4 hours per day, vigorously. Then, after a blood test during a routine exam, my blood sugar had spiked leading to a diagnoses of Type I diabetes. I had subconsciously been attempting to control my blood sugar levels with exercise. A year later I suffered a serious heart attack attributed to the diabetes tho it was triggered by getting kicked in the chest by a horse. I had to scale back my exercise regimen, but still maintained at least two hours of vigorous exercise, starting my day with 50 sit ups and 50 push ups, walking 5 miles daily instead of running 10, and reducing weight training by 60%, lighter weights, more repetitions. My doctors firmly believe my exercise regimen has kept me relatively healthy for my age even tho I have progressive congestive heart disease, and survived 5 different types of cancer, including two skin cancers that required serious surgery. Next Wednesday I'm receiving a new pacemaker/defrib device to better assist my heart which now has a failing ventricular chamber in addition to atrial issues. This means when a toilet seat falls from the sky, hits me in the head and I die, my heart will keep beating. :) This also means no more wild sex on the trampoline. I'm going to miss the trampoline.

My legs are problematic, but I still average 5 miles of walking daily, with exception of days that are icy. Also, when it rains, the dog refuses to spend time outdoors, so my time walking is curtailed for rain or snow. He's terrified of getting wet. When he stinks, bathing him is an ordeal. 120 lbs of wet dog desperate to escape the tub is a nightmare, even tho he thoroughly enjoys getting toweled down afterwards. He's a wuss of a dog. My wife leaves our home when I announce he's about to get bathed. I don't blame her.

Since I'm rarely alone, if ever, I don't have need of alert devices. I truly cherish a bit of solitude now and then. Unfortunately, mostly then.

Keep going as long as you can. Like an elephant, if a person lies down to die they die. Always keep going, never give up, never stop.

A lot of people die in bathrooms. For example, a bowel movement puts a strain on a person's heart, so a lot of heart attacks happen in bathrooms. Drowning in bathtubs due some medical trauma also is not rare.

Completely false.
10,000 people in the US die each year in toilet related injuries.
1.3 million people each year die in the US in car accidents.

Of course you are an expert on human ****.
Is this hands on experience, or are you just reading voraciously?

Humans are not elephants, and have no biological similarities.
Are you a certified veterinarian and a human doctor?
How do you find the time?

LOL.

That’s international numbers.

About 30k die in the US each year in traffic fatalities.

Yup, I grabbed the first Google page.
You are right.
The US number is 37,000, which is still shows him to be wrong.
Thanks.

If death were all that bad, everyone wouldn't do it. However, I'm not anxious to learn about the next step. Life can be a blessing, I find it so, and I won't go easily into the night. I'm looking forward to greeting my first great grandchild this late summer. The thought of my son as a grandfather makes me chortle. He cried like a baby at his daughter's wedding, big tough guy. :)

Your numbers are inadequate, check the AMA's figures. They detail deaths beyond mere heart attacks and strokes as shown on death certificates, showing the underlying causes. Even the AARP shows how wrong you are. Less than 35k people die in the US annually from car accidents, and the numbers have been dropping. Learn how to do some real research, not just 1 minute googling. That 1.3 mil figure is international totals. The leading cause of death in the US is cardiac issues, with slightly more than 600k deaths annually. And I specifically said bathroom deaths outnumber car deaths, not toilet related deaths, merely stating toilet related deaths were the most common.

Stop posting garbage and learn how to read.

And take your hands out of your pockets, it might grow, but I doubt it.

:lamo "Completely false." 1.3 million people do not die in the USA in car accidents. 1.3 million people in the WORLD die each year in car accidents. In the USA it is around 40,000 a year.

Premature, but thanks. It is still in the oven on bake. Mom looks beautiful, simply glowing. Her husband, a nervous wreck. :) Another big macho guy. She's got him on a short leash, he's at her beck and call. I remember that feeling the first time. :)

Yeah, great.

But does it lower cardiovascular events?

We’ve got four other drug classes that do.

OMG
Not that it matters as I will not take any NEW med. The real world side effects are always much greater and more pronounced than as advertised when released.
That said, IF this does as advertised, it is genuinely needed and will make more money for the evil, Big Pharma.
