How I got my LDL to 118

Actually.....I was chased down by a little redhead.

Redheaded women scare the heck out of me. Both my wives were raven haired, until I learned different from bottles that offered me nothing to drink. What did I know?

Hey, I resemble that remark...you should be afraid...be very afraid...:2razz:

When it comes to cholesterol & atherosclerotic plaque clogging your arteries, you don't want to fool around. I spent the last 40 years chasing my cholesterol & as a result got the news from a July echocardiogram that I had an aortic stenosis. Briefly, that is cholesterol working its way up your aorta (your big main artery) towards your heart. If that is allowed to progress you're looking at surgery to replace that valve in your heart.

Two months ago I was sent to a cardiologist who put me on an old cholesterol drug called Zetia (exetimbe). See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ezetimibe. None of the physicians I'd been seeing for the past 40 years ever mentioned this drug, which inhibits the absorption of cholesterol in your small intestine. I got a call today that my LDL (low density lipoprotein) number was now down to 118 & that my stenosis was unchanged since July per a recent repeat echocardiogram. (I take Lipitor also, 60 mg/day, along with 10 mg of the Zetia.)

'Good' LDL numbers are below 130. Above 130, I suggest you get your affairs in order.

If anyone reading this has cholesterol problems I hope you're either on Zetia or plan to make an appointment with your doctor because this stuff worked for me & likely will work for you. It's generic & inexpensive.

Well, you sure as hell were right about the Kratom.
Did you know it even lowered my blood pressure?
122 over 84.

Can I ask what brand you purchased?

I deleted your PM some time ago. Please PM me with info re kratom. Thanks!

my LDL is below 130, but i have a pretty high HDL (100+.) it's a genetic thing. Mom is the same way. i do twice a year checkups / once a year bloodwork.

You are correct. It's genetic. Some just cannot remove the fats in the blood naturally. My LDL is 90, HDL is 48. Overall cholesteral is 159. Never been higher then the 180s. And I have not always had a healthy diet. Yet a nurse that I used to know wass a 115 lb vegetarian who only adds lemon juice to salads rather then dressing. Her overall cholesteral was over 400. Most who do have a cholesteral issue can find the right drug or combination of cholesteral drugs to manage it, however unfortunately, many start managing it a bit too late in life.

Since mine is largely good cholesterol and my weight is good, I'm not as concerned. However, I have already started changing my diet a bit. I don't want to be on one of those pills if I can help it.

Good to hear. Keep up the checkups. If you ever have to go on one of those pills, you will be starting early enough to make a difference.

will do. i don't mind the checkups too much. it's nice that i'm no longer an overweight smoker like i was in my 20s. i like that my lungs are in good shape again.

DuPont: 'Better things for better living through chemistry.' It was their slogan at their pavillion at the 1939 NYC Worlds Fair. That motto is still in an archway in one of their buildings in Wilmington, DE.

Dang right. I also gave up refined sugar for honey in my sweet tea, then switched to Chai tea.
It tastes wonderful.

Just came from my cardiologist. Total cholesterol is 195 (down from 200), LDL is 118. Maximum dose of Zetia is 10 mg. Insurance will only pay for Repatha if you have Coronary Artery Disease, which I do not, so the high expense can not be justified.

My Dr ok-ed the Zetia for 90 days...then check my blood again...all I gotta do is pick it up at the pharmacy...

Good for you. Interesting thing I picked up from my cardiologist: 10 mg of Zetia is it. Does no good to take more. I had asked.

The thing that bothers me is the fact that this drug has been around for years & it never came up from the doctors who were prescribing the Lipitor for me. If I had been taking Zetia years ago I might not have this aortic stenosis.

Same here, not a word mentioned about Zetia...when I sent my Dr a message through "My Chart" asking about it, he said and I quote..."It's worth a try"...I've been taking it for a few days now...so far, so good, no obvious side effects...thanks again for bringing it to my attention!

I'm happy to help you out. If I were you I'd find another doctor who is more up to speed on treating people with high LDL. You should shoot for at least my numbers: total cholesterol 195, LDL 118.
