DON"T Play Russian Roulette When It Comes to Colon Cancer

if you are age 50, or older, get the dreaded 'colonoscopy' ............. it may save your life .............
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colorectal_cancer

The colorectal exam is not just a diagnostics. It is one of the few procedures that can actually PREVENT cancer. That's a winner. The prep, although it gets a bad rap, isn't bad at all. The reason people complain about it is that people complain about it. It's drinking a slightly sweet chalky substance and relieving one's self. Oh, the horrors!

If the doctor finds polyps, they are lab tested. If they're just ordinary polyps, you're good for ten years providing you don't have a history of the disease. If they test to be ANOTHER type of polyp, still not cancerous, you'll be told to have another exam in five years. (These are general recommendations.) If it's cancerous, then you hope it hasn't broken through to the edges of the bowel and can start immediate treatment.

There are very few procedures that can actually PREVENT cancer. This is one of them. Every single person should ask their doc about it. It could save your life.

Of course there is that buffet you've been wanting to try on the way home...

Is that the one where they stick the finger up your pooper?

I've apparently got that one too look forward to when I make it to 40.

first is recommended @ age 50, unless there is a family history of colon cancer; in that case first one would be recommended earlier than age 50

sounds like what you are talking about may be a DRE check for enlarged prostate aka BPH

That's really a big deal to point out. I REALLY dreaded my first one a few years ago because of the supposed horrible, awful, prep. I haven't seen data on it, but I have to believe others put it off or don't get it for the same reason. And it's stupid. Like you say, it's at worst mildly inconvenient. It doesn't hurt, you don't feel bad, it lasts about 1 day, you get your procedure which is obviously painless because you're asleep, and then celebrate with a nice meal.

My doctor recommended splitting the prep into two days with an afternoon procedure, and I did find it easier the second time than the first. Also, the amount of liquid you have to drink is a lot less than it used to be and it tastes better IME.

Anyway, ignore the whiners, don't be a baby - get it done when your doctor tells you to get it done. Not getting a colonoscopy because of the prep is as stupid as not traveling to great places around the country or the world because you hear lots of people whine about how awful plane travel can be....

No, that's for prostate cancer - the check is for an enlarged prostate. My dad died of prostate cancer, so I've got family history and have had the check every year for about as long as I can remember. Takes my doctor about 2 or 3 seconds. You'll get over it... ;)

i'm in my early 40s, and my next colonoscopy is going to be scheduled for December. i'm probably in one of the highest risk groups. i'm not looking forward to it, but i feel like i'm on a decent path, and i want to walk that path for as many years as i can. i was 35 when i got my first one. i'm not a physician, but my recommendation would be to have the first one well before age 50, especially if there are any risk factors whatsoever.

procedure this morning was quick & easy; just don't care for the Versed & the Fentanyl cocktail used for anesthesia

just like last time four polyps were located & removed for pathology; takes 7 to 10 days for a pathology report

I haven't had a stogie this month yet so, I guess I know what I will be doing later today  ..........

remember: the colonoscopy is your friend, not your enemy so, get yours accordingly :peace

No, that is the prostate check I get one annually. Takes a couple seconds and you're done. Colonoscopy you are gassed and you are out like a light and they go inside with cameras to show you what you look like. If they find polyps they remove them. I have had this every 3 years and now every five because they only ground one small polyp on the last test. My coworker ignored this for years and they found 50 polyps in him!!!
