Have any of you ever dones a 5k or longer race?

OK, I ran again this morning. Took 11.5 minutes to run a mile, then I started alternating walking and (barely) jogging til I reached the 20 minute mark. Basically, I did a little over half a 5k in 20 minutes. I'm hoping that in the morning or at least by Sunday, I'm not going to be quite as sore as I was after the first time I ran this week, so that I can try to better that first mile time by a few seconds, and make a little more distance in the 20 minutes.

I kept going after the first mile mostly because so many experts say that we need at least 20 minutes of exercise for it to really "count", plus I'm still looking to burn extra calories in my effort to loose weight. this morning I was at 205, down from 244 in November (averaging almost 2 lbs/week) - my goal is to be around 190-195 by early summer.

I was hating running last week mostly because I was pushing it too hard. So I have been experimenting with pace, trying to find the fastest pace that I can do without feeling miserable. This morning I ran my first mile in about 13.5 minutes, so that's a pretty significant slow down over Fri, but at least I didn't hate every second of it. I'm thinking that I am going to continue this pace for a few days, then start trying to slowly increase it, hopefully without it becoming miserable again.
