I've been really into my health lately and it seems that the Mediterranean Diet is the way to go! (Correct me if I'm wrong)
I can understand most of the points fitness experts make, but there's one point I'm stuck on..
They say drinking a glass of red wine has many health benefits. They say drinking 6-8 oz of red wine a day reduces the risk of many diseases such as cancer and high cholesterol.
Do any of you know of or follow this diet? Is it safe and healthy to drink a glass of red wine a day? How much is too much?

As long as you just have one.

Females: I've seen 1-2 a day, or 1 a day.

Males: I've seen 1-2 a day, or 2 a day.

That's for the maximum cardiovascular outcome over time. It does not appear to cause any other identifiable harm, or at least, not what they were looking for in the studies. However, risk factors should be attended to:

1. Family risk of alcoholism and/or substance dependence;

2. Family risk of psychological addiction (ie, not just drugs, but say gambling or sex or whatever - but make sure it's actual addiction not "that person does that more than I think they should).

3. "race". Many people whose ancestors were largely Asian lack a certain liver enzyme, one of four, and this impacts ability to break down alcohol. The effect therefore lasts longer.

4. Whether you feel like it.

I love wine but I usually end up drinking the whole bottle in one sitting so I avoid it unless its a social occasion.

I memorized this when I was in Italy, "vino de la casa per favore, rosso. 1 liter."

Shared by Bill O'Reilly, Bill Crosby, Donald Trump, Bill Clinton, Roman Polanski and Anthony Weiner.

That's fine, but what about the wine glass?

How about seven glasses a week...all in one day?

Is there any real clinical evidence for it, and if so, is it any more beneficial than grape juice would be?

Sardinians live a very long time. Sardinians drink a lot of red wine. Good enough for me.

That's my point! People who follow the Mediterranean Diet statistically live longer and healthier lives.
I'm just nervous about drinking alcohol everyday.. I mean it's not like I get drunk, but still..

Is it too much? Does it actually keep people healthier?

I guess it depends on who you ask.

My family is from Sicily and drinking red wine is part of our cultural heritage. Growing up we kids were routinely given red wine, mixed with water, with our Sunday dinner, which was inevitably some kind of pasta and meat.

Without boring you with details a few years ago I went for a routine medical exam that turned up an odd EKG reading - it was the first EKG I had ever had. Long story short it turns I have something called a Right Bundle Branch Block which in plain English means it takes longer than it should for the electrical signals to traverse one side of the heart so the heart contracts out of sync. It can indicate heart damage or it can be completely benign. In my case the doctor concluded it's caused by thickened heart muscle because I was an athlete in my younger days - I played football and was a competition weightlifter - and still lift today. To get to that conclusion I saw two cardiologists had a ton of tests and still routinely see a cardiology NP once a year as part of my annual physical.

When they ask they typical "lifestyle" questions I always answer the same way. A glass of red wine every day, scotch or bourbon on Sunday and a cigar or two a week (not inhaled). No one has ever complained about those and one of the cardiologists actually did say the wine was good for me. When I saw the NP a couple of weeks ago what she did complain about is the amount of coffee I drink - 3 to 4 cups a day. Not a peep about the alcohol or the stogies.

I too drink a lot of coffee, I tried switching to green tea (which I typically drink a glass a day now), but I'll still have at least two glasses of coffee along side of it.
A few months ago I was at the 3-4 cups of coffee a day, but with the addition of the green tea I was able to cut it down to two.
I suppose it's still a lot of caffeine (Green Tea has a lot and every once in a while I'll also have a Monster energy drink totaling 4 cups of caffeine between all the drinks throughout the day).
I'm totally addicted to caffeine, and I know it! Every time I try to stop drinking so much I get these massive migraines. Ugh... I love coffee so!!!
