Is halving the number of infraction points needed to earn a suspension an idea to consider?
Ideally, it would not only reduce bad behavior considerably, but mean a lot less moderator bookkeeping.
Dedicated trolls can move on to other forums, and occasional/situational hotheads might learn better self-control.
I get the strong impression that certain posters are happy to disrupt the forums to the tune of multiple infractions, and the current high threshold gives them plenty of room to make others miserable, encourage similar disruptive conduct from other posters, & stifle speech in the bargain.
For every disruptive troll, how many thoughtful posters are exhausted, discouraged & driven away?
Oafishness, stupidity and partisan hackery are challenging enough without the additional obstacle of narcisisists and sociopaths using others as dumpsters for their emotional poison.
Ideally a win/win for the majority of rarely (if ever) infracting posters AND the moderation team.
