The coalition partner of chancellor Merkel said Germany should cancel the supposed order of 45 F18 super hornets.

Germany has to replace over 100 old Tornado jets and while the majority will be raplaced by 93 Eurofighters, 45 F18 were planned to be bought. The offered F35 was considered to be too bad in her performance.

In April defense minister Kramp-Karrenbauer wrote to her US colleague that Germany would order 45 F18 jets. One of the worlds biggest defense deals (9 billion €) is now shaking
since Merkels coalition partner SPD calls to cancel the deal.

Merkel herself has not commented the proposals yet. It i said she agreed to the deal in April as show of good will towards the Trump administration. Since Trump did not cease his hostilities it would make sense to cancel the contract.

Defense experts say the smartest option would be to place the order on hold until the US election.

Will be interesting how this turns out. If Nordstream 2 had to be cancelled, Germany would lose investments worth 8 billion €.

Placing the F18 deal into jeopardy would cost Boeing...which already is in extreme fianncial trouble, 9 billion € and it is doubtful the company could shoulder this loss at the current situation it is in.

I wouldn't blame Merkel if she canceled the deal. The way Trump has treated her and other allied leaders is disgusting and a shame on America.

Yep. You can't do long-term strategic deals with erratic entities.

The last 3+ years have been like a bad “Ocean’s Eleven” movie!

I doubt Merkel will cancel it outright. That would be the nuclear option. I assume she ignores Trump and places the order on hold until the election in USA happened. Then she might cancel it if Trump wins or confirms the order if Biden wins.

That would be the smart thing to do.

The Typhoon can be nuclear certified, the US if I recall correctly the US was going to sandbag the certification process to push Germany to buy a US plane

Boeing owns too much of our military contracts to ever be allowed to go under....at least not without spinning off McDonnell Douglas division into a stand alone company---and the few dozen Germany wanted won't make or break the company. As for whether or not she wants to cancel the deal out of pettiness, that is up to her. They were only going to use the F18's to clear the path for the inferior eurofighters. If they want to fight their way in, that is their choice.

Boeing is struggling on the commercial side of their business as all commercial airline business is struggling with right now. The defense side of Boeing has more work than they can basically handle right now.

Doesn't matter anyway. Germany is lost in the weeds right now under Merkle. Maybe better that that country doesn't have a strong military... hasn't gone well in the past. And WTF does Germany do for the NATO alliance anyway?

Too bad Poland isn't were Germany sits and Germany further East. Wouldn't that be a welcome change.

If Germany doesn't run Europe, France will.

France seems more sensible these days, and France doesn't have all the baggage Germany does.

Why didn't you simply build more of the Eurofighters?

Cost?

Performance?

The Eurofighter is superior. The original plan was to go full Eurofighter, to buy 45 F18 was a olive branch towards USA.

But now it akes no sense, considering how hostile USA is towards us.

Germany most powerful economy in europe...and you compare it with ****hole poland. I have news for you, the poles hate you but love your money.

Politics. The F 35 is crap, plan was to go full on eurofighter. Merkel wanted to give usa sonething to make relations better. It didnt work.

Yes I agree that is the best option for Germany. Biden can easily reverse Trump's expensive and stupid order. Like our national covid 19 response, it will have to wait until next year.

You make a great point and that is actually at the center of this; Germany's desire to dictate to the rest of Europe how to live.

Germany really can't be trusted. Not that I believe France can be 100% relied upon all the time either, but at least France like Britain, Australia and Canada make up the real alliance worth preserving.

Merkle has been a disaster for her country.

There is a lot to be admired about Germans when it comes to engineering and rocket science and beer .... I have German blood in me too. But from this American's point of view I don't trust Germany more than I can throw them. Germany today is nation full of "Greens" and leftists. The "Finlandization" of Germany has been going on for decades.

They had better hope they never have to go against an F-18 in the POS they end up buying....

She doesn't need a front line fighter and she and Putin know it. She wants US troops and their spending as well as base operating expenditures and other income from US taxpayers pumped into her economy to stare down the evil Putin. She has little to fear from Putin as Germany is Putin's largest gas customer and the least likely to be challenged. Who does she think she is France?

why would Germany need nuclear certified combat aircraft when they have no nuclear weapons. and no I don't give a damn if Germany could build them in 6 months. Don't have is don't have.

Plus, if Germany had F/A-18s they (with appropriate pilot training) could operate from U.S. aircraft carriers if needed in any future contingency.

Much like land locked Switzerland got some of their F/A-18 pilots carrier certified after they began operating the Hornets.

So by your account while Poland would be one-for-two this would make your Germany two-for-two.

The US stores Nuclear gravity bombs in Germany, an agreement exists (as part of Nato) that Germany maintains jets that can carry those nukes. The Tornado is the jet they use now, the Typhoon could do it but is not certified for it. The US likely does the certification
