~ The PM said Hong Kong's freedoms were being violated by a new security law and those affected would be offered a "route" out of the former UK colony.
About 350,000 UK passport holders, and 2.6 million others eligible, will be able to come to the UK for five years.
And after a further year, they will be able to apply for citizenship. Link.

A no brainer for me, this was the right thing to do as China starts to tramp down on the rights of National Overseas Passport holders living in Hong Kong. It'll probably mean China pulls the plug on Huawei's 5G involvement in UK infrastructure but that's a small price to pay.

*British National Overseas Passport holder.

If only they hadn’t sold the Hong Kongers out in the first place.

Screw Huawei.

I wouldn't even have one of their phones if all other brands became extinct.

You mean told China to shove the expiring lease agreement over around 86 pct of H.K. territory and annex it completely?

To then perpetually cart in food, electricity and drinking water to the remaining islands while having the Navies of the Western world (less wouldn't work) protect it in perpetuity?

You don't know much about H.K., do you?

Aint gonna please his base... more bloody immigrants...and more bloody Asians.

As for offering it.. hilarious. A German married to a Brit has to jump through multiple hoops and maybe get residency let alone citizenship, but are you from Hong Kong.. come on over!..

And China wont pull the plug on 5G. In fact, China is laughing all the way to the bank on this... they can get rid of troublemakers easily now. Boris played right into their hands.... well played China. China just has to revoke the citizenship of these people because hey, they are British citizens so need a visa to stay...

But saying that, what China did is of course morally and legally wrong.. they should have waited till it gets closer to 2047 when the agreement to hand over Hong Kong ends.

Now saying that, it is FULLY in their right to do what they are doing, because Hong Kong is Chinese and always was... it was stolen by the British Empire.. sorry "Bought at gun point". That they are doing it right now, is frankly because the UK is a non entity on the world stage and China has become so powerful. They are basically doing a US, or British Empire by doing what the hell they want when they want. So frankly it is a bit hypocritical when the UK, US are critical of China on this point.. considering the history of these countries doing exactly the same. This of course does not make it morally right.. but still we dont live in a moral world.

But chances are that in a Boris administration, the offer will be a hollow one and not actually materialise.

Boris' base isn't just the far right alties who hate BLM but also the centrists like Chris Patten. Even in Thatcher's day you had wings of the conservative party and you couldn't fit all Conservatives under the "bigot" banner. Same now with Labour - it's simplistic to say labour is full of Palestine supporting marxists. You have to know and understand your opposition to defeat them - so yeah, a large part of the pro-Brexit mob were immigrant haters but some actually (and I respect thier decision even if I disagree it) believed we could do better and their decision was not borne out of hatred of immigrants.

The Conservatives are a broad church - a lot narrower than I'd like at the moment but still has many decent people in there. And if I had to confess - I'd say the same about Labour / Lib Dems / SNP / Plaid etc etc.

Situation in Hong Kong is a bit different from that of British passport holders in Europe.

I don't think it's so easy - remember that the current Chinese industrial modernisation and revolution really began with the Hong Kong handover or it was a remarkable coincidence. I know China could revoke their citizenship but also become international Pariah number 1.

But chances are that in a Boris administration, the offer will be a hollow one and not actually materialise.

Don't be so surprised, just as there were things you openly stated the UK wouldn't do because of International obligations in negotiations with the EU - there are things we should do for our own citizens.

They should have turned the leased part over to the legitimate government of the Republic of China, and kept the remainder for themselves. I'm sure Taipei would've been happy to work something out regarding utilities.

If military security was an issue, a mere handful of nuclear weapons would've been sufficient for HK's defense.

Economically Hong Kong was and is dependent on its relationship with mainland China. From the trade aspect, to the airport, water etc. The UK would have had to pour money into Hong Kong to keep it afloat.

If only international negotiations were that simple...

When people are not knowledgeable on reality but cannot suppress their conviction that they have something of importance to say anyway, the outcome need invariably be a load of horse manure being spouted.

The poster clearly hasn't the slightest clue and is best left at that.

If only they hadn’t sold the Hong Kongers out in the first place.
If only they hadn't taken it in the first place to support their lucrative opium industry.

There, we can agree on something.:lamo

I'm sure the last place they would want to end up is in Scotland, so I wouldn't worry too much about that potential banana skin.

i think you'll find boris & the Tories will insist on it ... and they won't really get a say in which part of the UK they would live in .... hence it's a big no from me ..... they can come after Scottish Independence

As British citizens they should be allowed to choose where in the British Isles that they live and work.

They'd be really old or dead by then.

If only you had voted Yes a few years ago when you had a chance.

Good for the UK!

But I don't think China will want to stop their involvement in the UK's 5G infrastructure. How else are they going to install whatever back doors and spying they have up their sleeve into English telecom?
