It's stupidly hot in the UK!

I have been in a communication unit and I have to admit, if you did a little bit sport before, even our green (combat) training was more like a little rougher boy scout camp.. ;o)

To be honest I think that all special forces units around the world are pretty much of the same calibre. I don't think the Royal Marines are better than the USMC or that the SAS/SBS are better than their Russian equivalents , they are all highly trained professionals. I'd also say that war these days doesn't really respect how intelligent, brave or skilled you are...long range weapons don't give a ****.

The US Army is like that. They have multiple boot camps, and your chosen MOS determined which one you went through. If you were in a support position, like communications or administration, then your basic training would be more focused on military protocol than on physical activity. If you had a combat MOS, then obviously the training was more focused on physical activity.

The Marines only have two basic training facilities, so no Marine gets to choose their MOS. It is assigned instead.

I agree. The Royal Marines are very good at what they do. So are the Navy SEALs, Army Rangers, and USMC Force Recon. They have all been trained much better than your typical soldier (certainly better than me), and are the elite for their branch of service.

A signals unit or communication specialist in your unit?

I was in a 7-man competition once and as we came to the finish line, a 3-man signals unit competition was also finishing across the valley. In each team, two squaddies were basically towing a very red and sweaty radio carrier around as fast as the teams could go - they obviously would have shared carrying duties. Looked so much harder than what we were doing but it's how I got into 3-man military competitions, I wanted to do something that demanding. Also, in the 7 man competition you always had an officer who ususally turned out to be the deadweight...

point-to-point radio system - we had trucks with 27m high antenna we got coordinates where we had to drive and build it up

fun fact: when I was there in the early 90´s the terminus "the red" for the opponent was changes to "the blue" ;o) :D :D

Ah, a Mercedes unit or a BMW unit? ;)

The situation is dire now with this "stupidly hot" weather...my only solution is Belgium and French Champagne...
