The Cold War ended 30 years ago. That expensive pillar is no longer needed nor economically justified.

Germany is fully capable of ensuring their own security nowadays.

Out of curiosity - do you honestly think US troops in Germany are specifically there to provide security in Germany? Simple yes or no required.

Once in a blue moon, you are on track and actually lucid. Apparently 15 Republicans have signed a letter requesting the reversal of this policy. Only an idiot thinks the USA are in Europe to protect Europe. Those bases are staging posts for American power into Africa and the middle east. They also provide hospital resources for injured servicemen - but Trump isn't bothered about that.

Except this would help Putin, I actually hope the US is called on its bluff here and Germany says "thanks for the bases but time for you to go." The US will have to find other places to put her troops around the world.

Trump threatened to withdraw half of the US occupation forces from Germany and "then we will see what happens", in this connection, human rights activists are again worried that the russians will not treacherously attack again, as usual, making the angry slamming of political doors ridiculous and useless.

Perhaps...just perhaps...if the US wasn't so gung-ho on projecting military power...the purpose you allude to would no longer be necessary.

btw, Trump has been very clear that he's not really interested in projecting US military power all over the world. He prefers economic power. Removal of US forces from Germany is right in line with his thinking.

However, I'm thinking the higher ups in Germany really aren't all that happy about Trump removing US forces. They love that US buffer and that US money. (Not to mention being able to use the US as a punching bag or a scapegoat when things don't go so well.)

If the US had led the world for 80 years, then they would not have lost the Vietnam War! Leadership in what? Hasn't exactly been great since WW2, a number of wars you got into and could not finish! What did you lead in since WW2? How to be losers! Trump is correct, stop wasting time and money on other countries and fix the US first.

Out of curiosity, why couldn't you answer the simple question honestly? Anyway, it's clear you thought the US is here in Europe to protect us but let's move on.

Trump has had 4-5 years to clearly make the case that he wants to remove and minimise US military manpower around the world - is he going to make this clearer in his re-election speeches? He's up against the US military and most of the GOP who know that military power will protect US economic interests.

I'm all for a reduction in US military presence and activity (covert and overt) around Africa especially - we lost too many good leaders because of the Cold War and sniper's bullets paid with US money.

NATO has not been an unqualified success in maintaining US/European security because member countries continued belligerent conduct far outside of Europe in Afghanistan, Syria, and Libya which was all none of our business. Now that Britain has left the European Union, it is time for Europe to make a break from the USA with regard to strategic foreign policy and our own security. We are glad to see the back of American troops on our soil. I understand the American president has a plan for them to become active in American cities instead.

1. Your question isn't that simple. It's a "gotcha" question. And heck, you did it again in this post. At one point, you make an assumption about what I think, but then you turn around and ask essentially the same question again. Sorry, but I don't get tripped up that easily. Take what I said in response to your question and be satisfied with it. It's all you get.

2. I don't know what Trump is going to give us in his re-election speeches. I suggest you wait and see instead of asking me.

3. But you are correct that he's up against the US military, Congressional GOP and...even though you didn't mention them...the Congressional Dems, as well. But those people aren't opposing Trump for the reason you give. They are opposing Trump because he is changing the focus of the government. The military mostly thinks they should be active all over the world. The Congressional Dems and GOP stand to lose money from donors and lobbyists who want the US military to be active all over the world. There are TRILLIONS at stake.

For me, the bigger question is whether these conflicting demands and interests will ever be resolved. The US clearly wishes to continue to project power into Africa and the Middle East - unfortunately so is Putin at the moment because Russia has so few friends left but both sides ignored China who has made larger inroads and made more friends there. Trump meanwhile - if he is bothered about US interests in Africa - may have to swallow his s***holes comment. I doubt he will and I hope he doesn't.
I'd like to see the end of US and Western involvement in Africa overall.

1. The goal of the war was to prevent the downfall of South Vietnam. Period.

2. The arms race to kill the USSR actually started around the Afghanistan debacle.

3. Reagan wasn't President during the Vietnam War.
