EU unity crumbles: Austria rejects opening borders with Italy

Why does Italy gotta be fascist about it.

I don't think this is a big deal.

What's a big deal in my mind is the EU sat back and watched tens of thousands of people die in Italy without lifting a finger to help.

The EU doesn't get involved in member country internal decisions. However... you forget that Germany voluntarily took in Italian and French Coronavirus patients as they had spare capacity to look after them. When the UK was failing to meet it's promise to run 100000 tests per day - German laboraties offered to help but BoJo had those tests shipped off to the US which was struggling to meet its own testing requirement.
Why? Brexit politics.

The Austrian Health Minister, Rudolf Anschober, said that while some regions in Italy have improved the situation, the country is still deemed a threat. Both Austria and Switzerland will continue to exclude Italy when they reopen their borders.

Countries within the EU are able to make decisions on their own borders - this isn't an "EU unity" issue at all.

I would not open the border either....yet. But soon sure depending on the progress the Italians are doing. At the moment it looks a bit like two steps in the right direction and the 1.5 steps back.. But it is heading in the right direction.

Pretty soon there'll be maps in schools making the Atlantic Ocean look a lot smaller and the English Channel much much bigger!

Wonder whether - like British passports - they are printed within the EU or in the UK..

I know some men whose cardiologists would not want their wives to visit them in cardiology wards. Give the guys a break.
