Viktor Orban of Hungary.

3/30/20
Hungary's parliament has voted to allow Prime Minister Viktor Orban to rule by decree indefinitely, in order to combat the coronavirus pandemic, giving the populist leader extra powers to unilaterally enact a series of sweeping measures. The bill, which has been criticized by international human rights watchdogs, has no specified end date and allows Orban to bypass a number of democratic institutions in his response to the outbreak. It was approved in parliament on Monday, with 138 votes in favor and 53 against. The bill required a two-thirds majority to pass. Its provisions go well beyond the various forms of legislation hastily put together by other European Union member states in response to the coronavirus pandemic, dramatically ramping up the strongman leader's powers.

Orban said on Hungarian national Kossuth radio last week: "We cannot react quickly if there are debates and lengthy legislative and lawmaking procedures. And in times of crisis and epidemic, the ability to respond rapidly can save lives. "The Government is not asking for anything extraordinary," he added. "It is asking for the ability to rapidly enact certain measures. We don't want to enact measures that the Government has no general right to enact -- we simply want to do so swiftly." But the bill has alarmed several international groups. Amnesty International warned it gives Orban's government "carte blanche to restrict human rights."

It has long been noted that Orban has Alt-right/nationalist/authoritarian tendencies and is the EU Prime Minister closest to Vladimir Putin. He is also the president of Fidesz, the political party with the most seats in Hungary's parliament.

How close can Orba push the rules that allow Hungary to remain in the EU? Or even just to continue to be a recipient of EU funds?

The cowardly EU will just tolerate him, they are too spineless to kick Hungary out.

Same can be said about NATO - specifically as Hungary is not living up to Article 2's declarations.

He's master at pushing the envelope just that far and, when the ban hammer starts swinging, taking a tiny step back.

The EU being the epitome of sluggishness and rarely of one and the same mind helps.

Any Member State may decide to withdraw from the Union in accordance with its own constitutional requirements, so the just cannot kick them out, and they don't have a reason to kick them out. The people have their own right to vote their goverement, I don't like him either but he was elected democratically. EU doesn't rule the European coutries.

There is indeed no provision in any of the EU statutes for expelling any member, a little fact that our resident EU expert seems to be unaware of.

What do you mean by "right direction"?

The main problem is that they have an ally in Poland and the requirement for a unanimous vote to punish them.

LOL proves my point, the EU has become a joke- or maybe they always were.

Kinda agree with you. We smaller countries in EU gets more affected by the decisions of the EU than the bigger ones so that's bad. The key word in parliament has Germany, France and Italy, so the smaller countries have no chance to make some decision that these big countries doesn't like. The EU use to work, but not now, for example if the Germans and French decide to make some decision that we don't like they just hit us with sanctions, and the post communist counries doesn't have such good economy as west, so we just can't afford that. It is difficult right know in the EU, but the problem is we can't nothing about it. (sorry for my English if is bad).

Your English is fine, and you're right. The EU is just a bully pulpit for Germany and France- they use the bloc to boss the other countries around to do their bidding. The UK figured this out and thats why they left it. I dont think the EU will last.

I don't think that neither, more and more people talking about going out, but you know again for smaller countires if EU will disintegrates it will be econominal disaster so we are kinda in the tough spot, and specially now with Covid-19 EU just shows how incaple it now is. If EU will breakdown my country Czech republic are in V4 (Poland, Hungary, Czech republic and Slovakia) so we are helping each other more than EU, so we would survive, but countries like Croatia, Latvia, Greece etc. would have real problems. Just look at UK they just left and they already have so many thing to deal with. Many people in europe would rather have reform in the EU, because the collapse of the EU would be really devastating.

I think you have a very good idea- split the EU into smaller blocs so as not to introduce rot and too much influence by the bigger states like Germany and France. Poland, Hungary, Czech, Slovakia and maybe even Austria could be one bloc. Former Yugoslavian states, Albania, Greece, Bulgaria and Romania could be another. Portugal, Ireland, Spain and Italy could be a third bloc. That way, the member states are more equal with regards to economic power and influence and can protect their specific blocs from the predations of the ones outside of it.

Yea, Bulgaria, Greece, Romania and Albania have a long history of cooperation and peace when lobbed together without a chaperone..
