Re: the UK under Lock Down

The BBC has made itself look like a complete bunch of idiots. They took offense at Emily Maitlis precise description of what Cummings did and the mood/view of the country and she was reprimanded for not being "impartial". What utter bull ****. This is more of the BBC's double standards. What she did was nothing like Newsnight/BBC has done in the past. Remember this:

because portraying Corbyn as a Kremlin guy was not being in violation of impartiality and Maitlis correct comments were breaching the impartial rule? Bull Crap BBC, Bull crap.

Ouch. On a related note, I guess it's lucky for Boris no-one will be going abroad this summer to notice they can't afford to buy anything:

Has me constantly praising the circumstances that precluded my ever getting a pension in sterling.

What a time to be going into Brexit....
Europe is putting together a fund to help rebuild and we are simply going to dive off the deep end without lessons in swimming.

We bounced back from two world wars, I'm sure we'll deal with this latest setback.

OK but we turfed Neville Chamberlain out soon after the first disasters of war. BoJo and Cummings look set to stay, whatever disaster they foist on us.

Wellllll not really. Sure that's the myth all Brits are indoctrinated to believe, but the reality the UK was on a long decline since WW1 and by the 1970s the UK was bankrupt and without an empire and US puppet.

Then you bounced economically back after joining Europe and opening up the economy according to EEC/EU treaties...Thatcher, love or hate her, embraced the basic principles of the treaty of Rome to cut the fat off the UK economy to make it more competitive. That saved the UK, 40 years after WW2.

And now you are heading the opposite way yet again.

But hey at least you have the United Kingdom...no wait that too is under threat.

Hopefully BoJo and his cronies will continue pushing their luck with the people to the extreme and will be outed at the next elections.

The ONLY reason the Tories are in power now is because Labour had a far left militant '70s throwback in charge who was unclear/unsure about his stance on Brexit, and also wanted some kind of socialist state.

A more modern centre left leader with a promise to deliver Brexit would have seen the Tories packing their bags - and would most certainly be doing a better job with the current crisis.

So we Brits have been indoctrinated by some myth to believe that we bounced back after two world wars?

I'm pretty certain we did recover, but how exactly do you think have we been hoodwinked for so long?

You stated Britain bounced back economically after joining Europe, so is this part of the "indoctrinated myth"?

I'd propose that (putting it more kindly than Pete did) invoking things like victory in the Battle of Britain (and other similar history) today serves bugger all with a people that in their vast majority weren't even born at the time. I'd also propose that the empire that Britain could fall back upon in those times no longer exists.

As such, invoking a once glorious past is as idiotic as, say, if Spain had placed confidence in overcoming economic plight of only yesterday on the fact that it (also) once ruled the world.

One can use France or Germany in this analogy just as much

IOW the English (cuz that's what this is really about) would be well advised to quit comforting themselves with nostalgic BS over times long dead and buried, and darn well work in the present. And I'm not at all saying they can't do it.

You stated Britain bounced back economically after joining Europe, so is this part of the "indoctrinated myth"?
It's simply factual and that's why the UK joined (of its own accord) in the first place. The decision was a competent one and thus prudent, because the country had become the sick man of Europe in the 60s already.
