Corona in Europe - and also worldwide

Love and best wishes to you all over there IC.

You too Serenity, hope you are keeping well - I know as a critical worker, you are probably right in the thick of it so I've been thinking about you.

Stay healthy!

I'm bewildered by BoJo's admission that infections will go up, and then pleads with Londoners to stay out of bars and cafes.

If bars and cafes are open, you'll always have those that will go there, so surely simply ordering them to close would be the logical solution.

seconded, thirded and carried. All three most heartily.

Meanwhile you (and yours) all keep safe as well.

Astonishing, and quite frankly depressing beyond words!

"Coronavirus: Italy's death toll overtakes China's"

Coronavirus: Italy's death toll overtakes China's - BBC News
IF (and that's a big one) China's figures are at all to be trusted.

But that's really besides the point, seeing how any amount of deaths from this is really most unsuitable for any numbers game along the lines of anyone having it better or worse.

Not implying you to be doing that, just a general address to those playing the better than thou game in pursuit of own political agenda.

It's bad for everyone and for those for whom it isn't bad enough yet, it will be.

If he refuses to shut the pubs, he robs the landlords of any avenue of claiming re-compensation for loss of business and thus income. This way he's passing the buck.

He's not only a clown but a scummy one at that, that's all this is about.

So basically, damned if they do, damned if they don't..... What a horrible dilemma!

What is perverse in this is not addressing what is clearly a source of danger (pubs and restaurants left open), while telling customers to shun the businesses.

If one had the money (which most of these small businesses do not), one could sue the whole darn crowd of government crooks for business damage by propaganda.

During the Conona debate in our parliament, the minister of medical issues who was responsible for corona issues collapsed due to over working while the debate took place

After he was sent home he was advised by his doctor to take full rest for some time. Meaning his time as minister/secretary of medical issues was over. He stepped down.

Now our government is a coalition of fiscal conservative liberals, democratic liberals and 2 christian political parties, both centrist parties.

But in their wisdom, our prime minister and the coalition parties/other members of the cabinet have chosen to assign the function of minister/secretary of medical issues to one member of the opposition party of the social democrats. Martin van Rijn was one of the under secretaries of medical issues during the previous cabinet so he has a lot of experience in that function.

So they have chosen to go against the political normal process of naming a member of one of the coalition parties as the new boss of medical issues. They have chosen the best option for the country, be damned the political reality. The new minister/secretary will in theory take over for the next three months to make sure the Corona decisions are not hindered by working in a newbie.

Political identity is not important in these times of crisis, experience is more important. After he stepped down as under secretary of medical issues he became president of the board of a group of hospitals.

A Dutch idiot (I cannot describe him in any other way) was sentenced to 10 weeks in jail (of which 2 weeks suspended) for coughing into the faces of 2 police officers shouting he was infecting them with corona.

He also has to pay 350 euro's to each of the 2 officers and has seen his driving license suspended for 10 months (due to driving while impaired).

On the subject of idiots, a British man faces a possible 3 months in prison or a £10k fine after being arrested for failing to self-isolate after arriving on the Isle of Man yesterday.

Police there have been ordered to arrest any new arrivals who fail to isolate for 14 days, even if they show no symptoms.

This idiot can now claim to be the first Brit to be arrested for breaching strict quarantine rules.... Well done, we're all really proud of you!

Germany has almost 20,000 cases but less than 66 deaths. They're not crowing about it though as the suspicion is it's mainly young people and Germany has been testing widely. UK by contrast 3,983 cases and 177 deaths (1/3rd in London) though the UK has tested nearly 67,000 people.

I have experienced the German medical system and I have liked the Germany medical system.

I have seen not one single thing in the media about what a fabulous job the Germans have done.....but then again they suck.

The Swedish strategy is based on isolating risk groups like the elderly and personal responsibility That big gathering are not allowed but else it mostly up to people to voluntarily follow advice like work at home if possible, stay at home at first sign of symptoms, avoid travel and keep social distancing. There it most cases seem to work that people work at home and people staying away from shops and restaurants. A big difference from other countries is that daycare centers and schools up to year nine is still open, while higher education is closed. There the reason for that it both the negative effect it would have on society, for example that hospital staff would need to stay home with the kids. Also avoid the risk that elderly relative would have to take care of the children and get infected.

I don't know if that strategy is good or bad. While I respect that Swedish politicians listen to and base their decisions on the advice from government agencies. That Sweden have a long history of independent government agencies with professional civil servants.

I would imagine to last thing people want to hear or read is how fabulous the Germans are!
