Amsterdam considering moving red light district indoors

City council releases plans to build an ‘erotic centre’ to prevent rowdy tourists

Amsterdam is considering moving part of its red light district indoors to an “erotic” complex where prostitutes no longer beckon customers through street-front windows that often attract rowdy tourists.

In plans released on Wednesday, the Dutch city said the complex could include a bed and breakfast for prostitutes as well as a sex club, sex theatre and cafes.

I've been to A-dam a number of times & the city is suffering from what I call 'overtourism.' Between the ready availability of pot & hashish, the notorious 'red light district' attracts crowds that can get rowdy. This plan may be an effective solution to a growing problem.

Amsterdam was once a great city to visit, but they keep working to kill the appeal.

Are the citizens going to like their city after it is degraded to chase away the tourists?

A girlfriend and I found the townies rowdy. Checking out the red light district was the only place in Amsterdam I was, rather aggressively, offered cocaine. I guess it's not really for tourists; it's for sex customers. That the scene becomes a tourist attraction is a bit macabre. Still, can't spend a couple weeks there without taking a look (as a one time tourist).

I watched a naked couple have sex on the stage of a theater in the Red Light district. They were like robots going through a programmed routine. Nothing stimulating even though unusual. One less thing on my Bucket List.

I've had fun with girlfriends but I'm far too square for that. I'm uncomfortable at a strip club.

Personally, I think Amsterdam WAS probably a wonderful city!

I was there mid December last year, and can safely say I won't be returning in a hurry.

Apart from the crap weather, which is to be expected in December, it was too expensive, and the Dutch in general seem hellbent on enforcing stupid bureaucratic practices that make no sense at all.

Amsterdam is a fantastic city. But sex-trafficking remains a stubborn problem.

Amsterdam is also a huge destination for stag and hen-parties. Some towns have had that "distinction: and done everything they could to change the reputation. Newquay in Cornwall was once the stag-capital of the UK but the locals got fed up after the deaths of two drunk teenagers and things are very different in Newquay now.

If the Dutch want to change Amssterdam's reputation, they have a lot of work to do and putting the red-light district into a new centre makes sense. I wish them well - stag-and hen-parties are going to happen and it will mess things up for families.
Ayia Napa/Agia Napa in Cyprus already has that reputation and the locals seem happy about it - you probably need somewhere where things will be like s**t for normal holidaymakers and families but you should also I suppose know that if you go there - anything that happens is your decision and fault.

What bothers you most? Length or girth?
