[W:21]WPropaganda in Advert-Scandinavian Airlines Ad Declares 'No Such Thing' as Scand. Culture

Cultures and peoples don't exist in hermetically sealed vessels, walled off from one another. All cultures are full of borrowed ideas and practices. Cross-pollination of cultures is what creates new cultures all the time.

Almost all cultures are a snapshot, a moment in time for a people or a nation. Over long periods of time cultures change radically or evolve slowly into something new and different. A modern Swede has almost nothing in common with farmer/herder Jomsvikings from the 9th Century. So in the long run all cultures don't exist for any length of time as they are always transforming and evolving/changing.

In these two senses the OP's cited video is spot on.

Cheers.
Evilroddy.
The video is spot on, however that won't stop the far right Neo Nazi scum from condemning it, which they are in Denmark.

Funny thing is.. Swedish meatball is based of a Danish meatball which I belive came from the Byzantine Empire/Roman or something like that. Only reason Swedish meatballs are as famous as they are, is because of the Swedish Cook on the Muppets.

While Scandinavians have a lot in common, it is no different that any country or region. Danes from the capital have different traditions than people from Jutland. Good example, a Southern Jutland tradition at weddings is to cut off the grooms sock toes. Only place it happens. Swedes are different in the North vs South, Lapland vs non Lapland and so on. There is no real "Scandinavian culture" per say.

Re: Propaganda in Advertising- Scandinavian Airlines Ad Declares 'No Such Thing' as Scandinavian Cul

There is a unique Scandinavian culture, replete with language, customs, architecture, history, food, and more. To point to Swedish meatballs and say that the existence of ground meat made into balls and cooked in other cuisines negates 14000 years of Scandinavian existence is the height of absurdity.

There are some very nasty people on DP. The only sensible thing to do is to ignore them. Attempts to engage in civilised discussion with them will be fruitless.

Well, that was a fast turnaround! SaS pulled the video from its YouTube channel only 45 minutes after I started the OP. Lol, maybe it managed to reach 10k dislikes in that 45 minutes. Tough luck for them however, the video has been copied to Twitter, where it will live on.

The video is spot on,
It is a spin on reality which makes it not "spot on".

Re: Propaganda in Advertising- Scandinavian Airlines Ad Declares 'No Such Thing' as Scandinavian Cul

~..........................On the positive side, I'm fairly sure the paperclip and pre-copyright-borrowing-of-ideas claims are spot on.
Nope.

I invented both of them, it's just that I keep mum about it.

Besides promoting travel the whole thing had a strong satirical touch anyway. Intentional as anyone with half a brain would be able to comprehend.

But I guess if one wants to go into indignant meltdown over the whole thing, their problem.

Greatest irony resting in who you're addressing that piece of advice to.

Birds of a feather.. But then you're just one of us "nasty people."

One irony exposed in the outrage about the video is that many Americans demand that non-white immigrants integrate and take on American values. Seems that (even in a light-hearted video) that isn't actually true. I guess for some, a black Swede/Norweigian/Fin who takes on Swedish/Norweigian/Fin values and immerses themselves in the local culture will never really be seen as Swedish/Norweigian/Fin...

Seems the only nationalist group that will see black / muslim chinese as fellow natives if they take on local Values are still the old Front Nationale of France.

Re: Propaganda in Advertising- Scandinavian Airlines Ad Declares 'No Such Thing' as Scandinavian Cul

A black African man says, "we're no better than our Viking ancestors", as blonde women make sad, disappointed faces to learn that there is no such thing as Scandinavian culture, its all been stolen from China, Turkey, Denmark, and Germany, and others.

What I admire about Scandinavians is their Viking heritage. By denying the existence of Viking culture, Swedes are coping with their Viking guilt. The Vikings had done a lot of damage psychologically to the psyche of Europe, pillaging and raiding etc., which may be equated with Imperial Japan's atrocities in China in the modern era. I'm certain that the brutal part of Viking history is not taught in Sweden.

Who is denying "Viking culture"? There is no Viking guilt.. We Scandinavians are quite proud of our Viking past...even though it did spawn the British and American Empires...

Pre-copyright?
Lovely to meet you, Mr. Disney. Rumors of your death must have been greatly exaggerated.

The video is overwhelmingly unpopular on YouTube, where it's received 9k dislikes. Have you noticed an increase in political or sociological propaganda finding its way into advertising? Given the unpopularity of such ads, why are companies like SAS agreeing to put such propaganda into their advertising? Most million-dollar companies hire advertising firms which create advertising for them, so its the advertising firms who're injecting propaganda into ads.

That's weird.

I would think they should be very proud to be smart enough to adopt the best of other cultures.

Is this more indoctrination at play?

Hi. You have no originality and you never really put your own personal touch on anything. But good work copying others whom you can pay me money to visit. *thumbs up*

I would say that was a pretty clumsy marketing attempt, but apparently you will now feel proud. ;)

The Neo Nazi Scum right wingers are going crazy.. Death threats and bomb threats against companies and people involved with the advert.

Same people who demand that muslims and other non-white immigrants integrate or take on the values of the local culture. Just shows they never really meant any of those weasel words.

Yep the Danish Peoples Party. The same people would of course never dream about integrating if the moved abroad...we got a few of them here in Spain. Only positive is unlike one British woman, they don't complain about all the Spaniards living here.

You WHAT?

That's hard to believe anyone xenophobic could be so moronic.

Reminds me of visiting a guy living in an "urbanisation" in Almeria and my remarking of how the whole place was completely devoid of Spaniards. Shocked reply being "oh no, we don't have any foreigners here, we're all British."

Same thing with a busload of gaggledy-giggledy English females (won the trip on woman's hour?) blocking all the loos in a restaurant and exclaiming loudly how beautiful Spain is, but unfortunately so full of foreigners. Left without ordering anything at all.

As I once explained to Spanish friends, any Brit anywhere (for instance on the canals of Venice) can dip his hand into the water, taste it, and then declare "salty, so it's British".

Roll on return of the Empire, Boris can do it.

You ought to see the looks of horror when someone from Mexico is told "tacos al pastor" originated in Lebanon. And that Mexican cerveza is grounded in German immigrants. And that much Mexican "traditional" music is in Polka or Waltz because of German immigrants as well. Enchiladas "suisse" are based on European input.

Mexico also has good beer because of Germans immigrating to their country decades back.

Good is a matter of opinion. I find most Mexican beers to be Bud like. Or lite. :)

Tecate, Sol, Corona.... Swilling or cooking beers. One stand out was Dos Equis Amber.

The craft craze has hit them as well and they have a few awesome brews that have snuck over the border.

With (looking at the US) Hamburger having to do neither with Ham nor with the German city of that name, but nevertheless initially attributed to German immigrants having embarked from there and having brought the recipe with them.

But, as in most cases, not a German dish originally either.

But like with Mexico, American beer probably wouldn't have developed into what it is today without the likes of Jüngling (Yungling) and Anheuser, Schlitz, Miller etc.

Notwithstanding the fact that it doesn't compare quality-wise to German and Czech brews and not denigrating American craft beers at all.

About 10+ years ago near me, the local government had to send out a memo to all business owners in La Cala de Mijas, which is a beach front town near here. The memo stated, that as per XXXX law, all menus and signs had to be as a minimum in Spanish. The town was and still is, insanely British.

Tecate is terrible! They serve it in the strip clubs in Encenada, or so. I was told.....

I agree on the dark XX, also Pacifico. There used to a brand Carta Blanca, that’s is good, but I can’t find it anymore.

Spanish lady friend of mine was totally annoyed (some years back) at being unable to order anything in Torrox-Costa. Her very good command of English helped her there neither with the menu nor with inquiries to the staff.

Deutschland, jawohl!
