BoJo: Bridge between N Ireland and Scotland

Work is under way "by a range of government officials" to look at the idea of building a Scotland-Northern Ireland bridge, No 10 has said.
~Two routes have previously been floated - from Portpatrick to Larne or near Campbeltown to the Antrim coast.
The Portpatrick route would be more than 20 miles across the Irish Sea. Link.
I don't get why this is even an idea worth spending money for the consultation. Bojo already has two failed projects behind him including the London Garden Bridge and this one would cist the country billions compared to the £53 million on the Garden Bridge.

What problem does this bridge solve? What purpose does it serve?

Placate angry Scots? Try to maintain the United part of UK?
It would make heavy traffic between cheaper and easier. Whether that's worth the price of admission, can't say.

Re: BoJo: Bridge between N Ireland and Scotland

I came across this a couple of weeks ago in Gerald Of Wales's 'The Journey through Wales' (1188)

In clear weather the mountains of Ireland are visible from St David's, and the passage over the Irish sea may be performed in one short day; on which account William, the son of William the Bastard, and the second of the Norman kings in England, who was called Rufus, and who had penetrated far into Wales, on seeing Ireland from these rocks, is reported to have said, "I will summon hither all the ships of my realm, and with them make a bridge to attack that country." Which speech being related to Murchard, prince of Leinster, he paused awhile, and answered, "Did the king add to this mighty threat, If God please?" and being informed that he had made no mention of God in his speech, rejoicing in such a prognostic, he replied, "Since that man trusts in human, not divine power, I fear not his coming."

It's a smokescreen for something far worse. A distraction. For example Windrush deportations have been restarted and they're trying to ship innocent people to the Caribbean who were brought here as toddlers with their parents in the 1950's and 60's and lived their entire lives here. Very Trump-style. But then Bannon has had an input

Meanwhile rumors of BoJo planning to dismantle the Channel Tunnel to reinstall it across the Irish Sea remain unfounded.

    As yet.

Northern Ireland may well be rejoined with the Irish state and part of Europe by the time any bridge could be built.

It would be the longest bridge in the world if built, at more than 21 miles long, over open sea.

Sounds like a hazard to navigation to me. There's a fair bit of marine traffic through there, I bet.

A bridge over the North Channel has been discussed for decades. Astronomic costs have served as the primary barrier. The tolls would have to be ridiculous and would probably dissuade a lot of the traffic needed to help pay for the bridge.

Appeasement of Scots and Northern Irish who are angry about Brexit, to try to convince them to stay in the union.

Scotland will be out the UK before it starts .... he is wasting his time he thinks it can save the UK he is totally deluded ... apart from a decreasing number of Orange men we have very little in common with N Ireland nowadays
