Work is under way "by a range of government officials" to look at the idea of building a Scotland-Northern Ireland bridge, No 10 has said.
~Two routes have previously been floated - from Portpatrick to Larne or near Campbeltown to the Antrim coast.
The Portpatrick route would be more than 20 miles across the Irish Sea. Link.

I don't get why this is even an idea worth spending money for the consultation. Bojo already has two failed projects behind him including the London Garden Bridge and this one would cist the country billions compared to the £53 million on the Garden Bridge.

What problem does this bridge solve? What purpose does it serve?

Placate angry Scots? Try to maintain the United part of UK?
It would make heavy traffic between cheaper and easier. Whether that's worth the price of admission, can't say.

I came across this a couple of weeks ago in Gerald Of Wales's 'The Journey through Wales' (1188)

In clear weather the mountains of Ireland are visible from St David's, and the passage over the Irish sea may be performed in one short day; on which account William, the son of William the Bastard, and the second of the Norman kings in England, who was called Rufus, and who had penetrated far into Wales, on seeing Ireland from these rocks, is reported to have said, "I will summon hither all the ships of my realm, and with them make a bridge to attack that country." Which speech being related to Murchard, prince of Leinster, he paused awhile, and answered, "Did the king add to this mighty threat, If God please?" and being informed that he had made no mention of God in his speech, rejoicing in such a prognostic, he replied, "Since that man trusts in human, not divine power, I fear not his coming."

Plus ça change, plus c'est le même chose

It's a smokescreen for something far worse. A distraction. For example Windrush deportations have been restarted and they're trying to ship innocent people to the Caribbean who were brought here as toddlers with their parents in the 1950's and 60's and lived their entire lives here. Very Trump-style. But then Bannon has had an input

Meanwhile rumors of BoJo planning to dismantle the Channel Tunnel to reinstall it across the Irish Sea remain unfounded.

As yet.

Northern Ireland may well be rejoined with the Irish state and part of Europe by the time any bridge could be built.

It would be the longest bridge in the world if built, at more than 21 miles long, over open sea.

Sounds like a hazard to navigation to me. There's a fair bit of marine traffic through there, I bet.

A bridge over the North Channel has been discussed for decades. Astronomic costs have served as the primary barrier. The tolls would have to be ridiculous and would probably dissuade a lot of the traffic needed to help pay for the bridge.

Appeasement of Scots and Northern Irish who are angry about Brexit, to try to convince them to stay in the union.

Scotland will be out the UK before it starts .... he is wasting his time he thinks it can save the UK he is totally deluded ... apart from a decreasing number of Orange men we have very little in common with N Ireland nowadays

Lol would not even be close to the worlds longest sea bridge.

The "innocent people" being deported are all convicted criminals. As for the bridge, yes a symbolic gesture of good will. Thing is never getting built in 900+ feet deep water.

Not true.

What problem, if any, would this bridge address and resolve?

A stadium-full of Huns at Ibrox might disagree.
Always been a Celtic supporter myself, but then my clan were Catholic from the Isles. My aunts thought the Church started going to hell when they stopped saying Mass in Latin.

One comment I read elsewhere said "until the Royal Navy can prove they won't pilot into the Isle of Skye on a regular basis, the idea of pylons and barriers in the Irish Sea is far too dangerous..."

Not discounting the trench where we buried tonnes of bombs and radioactive waste.

Yes true, but nice try at baseless declarations.

Windrush: Government defends Jamaica deportation flight - BBC News

"Home Secretary Priti Patel has defended plans to deport 50 people to Jamaica on Tuesday, after more than 170 MPs called for the flight to be halted.

She said those on the flight had been convicted of "serious offences" carrying sentences of more than a year.

She was bound by legislation to deport them, she said."
Bull****. Yes some of them are bad people but some are not.

There is one case of a 30+ year old man living in the UK since he was 11, convicted of robbery over a decade ago under a law that was illegal and he served a 2 months in jail. He is not the only one.

This is another Tory crapfest on the law and human rights. They seem not to learn from thier mistakes and who cares it is only some black people... Right?

Great quote! Unfortunately Murchard’s confidence was misplaced. The Anglo-Normans did come in the end and it took 800 years to get rid of the buggers. Still some of them left in the North.

and most of 'em Scots to boot.

This "Tory Crapfest" is simply enforcement of a law Labour enacted. And I haven't said a word about them being "bad people". I said they were criminals, shown that this is about criminal deportations, and you have verified that the person you find so sympathetic is a criminal.

Let the UK pay for it now, and when Scotland is independent, they get it for free. And if NI ever reunites with Ireland, they will have a nice border with another EU country.

Glad I don't have to pay for it...

I wouldn't even want to hazard a guess at the cost of the bridge.

Whatever the projected financial costs turn out to be, you might as well treble it, if HS2 is anything to go by.

Let us not forget the Wembley stadium financial debacle too.

The latter two examples are either pure stupidity and mismanagement, or out and out corruption?

No.. he was not a criminal, because the law he was convicted under was illegal.

The thread is about the proposed bridge between Northern Ireland and Scotland. Please create your own thread about the deportations.
