US Won’t Extradite Wife of Diplomat Who Killed British Teen in Wrong-Way Crash

Why else would she be there? You can't accidentally just drive on the wrong side of the road, at least while sober.
Well, if you're used to driving on the right side of the road (like in US and Europe) I guess it can happen in a country that has left side drive. Especially if you get onto a country road in the night with no traffic to remind you. It happened right near the exit of the RAF base she was coming from.

If you have a previous driving infraction for "not paying attention" like she has, I reckon being off with the fairies for some 400 yards can recur without any alcohol being involved.

Vehicles on the base would be driving on the left too, she would be seeing them do so day in and day out. I can understand maybe just pulling out for a brief second while really tired but not actually start driving on the other side. Usually being on the wrong side of the car would be enough for people to quickly realize their mistake.

Based upon personal experience, one can do that

I understand the original intent of diplomatic immunity was to protect a foreign diplomat with safe passage in a foreign country. But it is the most abused privilege.
Diplomat and family do not have to pay parking violations or not responsible to pay rent or other debts. On a more serious side, in NYC there was a son of a foreign diplomat listed as prime suspect in a chain of rapes was allowed to waltz back to his home land untouched years ago.

Anne Sacoolas killed a young 19 year old man and was able to walk away without having her hand slapped. What a system,

Diplomatic immunity - Wikipedia
Diplomatic immunity is a form of legal immunity that ensures diplomats are given safe passage and are considered not susceptible to lawsuit or prosecution under the host country's laws, although they may still be expelled. Modern diplomatic immunity was codified as international law in the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations (1961) which has been ratified by all but a handful of nations.

Assuming the vehicle she was driving in Britain must have had the steering wheel on the right side of the car.

Driving it on the right side of the road would mean the driver was seated up against the shoulder of the road making handling and turning quite difficult.

It was not intentional to hit the young man head on but there are consequences to one's carelessness.

It is like in hockey where you are responsible for your stick striking another player even if not intentional.

Too many unqualified people are behind the wheel of motor driven ton of steel.

She knowingly drove on the wrong side of the road and she ended up killing someone. She was either really stupid or really drunk neither are an excuse form the law and justice.

Knowingly?? How did you determine that? Its not conceivable to you that a person who spent her life driving on the right side of the street might simply have made an honest mistake by doing the same in a country where they drive on the left? As usual, it is the judgement of the left that is suspect here.

It was a tragic accident, but she wasn't drunk or under the influence. 14 years is BS.

As pointed out before it's UP TO 14 years. We have many laws here that have high 'UP TO' penalties but for those with a good lawyer that max is rarely given. How many howl when certain people get a day or two in jail instead of the max?

Now if a foreigner killed an American 19 year old and then fled the country during the interview process citing immunity and claiming our laws were much stiffer than the home country, would you just shrug that off???

FYI, it wasn't a tragic accident- it was a DEADLY accident and diplomatic immunity shouldn't be used because some think the host nation's laws are too severe.... :peace

How many times has the rabid right claimed ignorance of the law is no excuse?

It wasn't so much an 'honest' mistake but far more a DEADLY mistake in which an innocent life was forfeit. How some would howl if a foreigner ran over an American and then used Diplomatic Immunity to escape any punishment.

As usual, it is the judgement of the right that is suspect here... :peace

It's up to and running away from justice would usually add to the sentence. All this is academic though as the US has made it clear she won't have to face the courts for what she did. That's the thing that should upset people.

Yeah, disagree on "knowingly" too. There are plenty of recent incidents where we see people accidentally driving on the wrong side (for us). Skipping the country and escaping justice though... that deserves zero respect.

So she stated driving on the wrong side of the road, didn't realize that somehow she is on the wrong side and then when she lights she still doesn't clue in? That sounds like some kind of impairment to me. Either way she ended up killing someone then fleeing justice, she needs to be punished.

So, not just the pizza....

Please foolish again.

Yes just the pizza. Only one foolish here is anyone who defends the US justice system as fair, especially when it comes for the poor and non white population.

The US should have allowed a trial in Britain with an agreement that she serve any prison time in the United States. The US government enters into such agreements often.

Under the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, the families of diplomats are also covered by diplomatic immunity.

However, any country is also allowed to waive diplomatic immunity and allow an accused diplomat or family member to stand trial.

Clearly, this US refusal is a Trump/Pompeo decision. Conversely, Trump and Pompeo cared not a whit for what happened to US Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch.

No, he wasn't incarcerated just for the Pizza.

Had it been just the Pizza he likely would have gotten off with a fine and time served.

Take it up with 'the right' then. Dont accuse me of things I havent said.

I really don't understand why Anne Sacoolas doesn't just come back and face the music, as a USAF Sgt did exactly the same thing in 2014 outside of Mildenhall in England and received a 12 month driving ban. So what she is looking at is making an apology to the family and receiving a 12 month driving ban and a suspended sentence.

The UK Government is now having to review extradition, as well as the arrangements in relation to Croughton, and possible pressure for greater scruting of US bases and the use of Diplomatic Immunity.

Considering the heartbreak and upset this has caused, wouldn't it just be simpler to just face justice, in order that the family of Harry Dunn can have some closure and actually facing justice may be better in the long run for Anne Sacoolas's own mental health.

The Dunn family just lost their Judicial Review at the High Court but will be appealing the case, to the Court of Appeal and UK Supreme Court.

The case is an indictment on the British Government and Civil Servants that they can't even word and frame a simple agreement in order to protect the innocent British public.

Equally what a disgusting indictment on the US Government who refused to waive immunity in circumstances immunity was never meant to be applied and in relation to a close ally that lets them operate spy bases in the first place.

I suppose those who live near US bases abroad better keep their children in-door's as who knows what secret agreements apply.

simple really ... Americans believe they are above the law of other countries ... yet say it's the other way for other nationalities ... time to end these exemptions for diplomats and there families allowed to sneak out of countries to avoid criminal punishment for their crimes and end sending suspected criminals wanted by the USA when they do not reciprocate
