Sperm donations taken from men after they have died should be allowed, a study says. The analysis, which is published in the Journal of Medical Ethics, claims that opt-in post-death donations could be a "morally permissible" way of increasing the stocks available.

In 2017 in the UK, 2,345 babies were born after a sperm donation. However, there is a growing shortage of donations around the country because of strict regulations. Link.

Instead of looking at why men are less and less willing to donate, our medical groups are coming up with more and more desperate ways to get donor sperm. There's also the many cases where donors have suddenly found themselves liable for child benefit which simply means sperm donors are few and far between.

Why is this a problem? I mean, I understand in cases of lesbian couples, or in matters where a husband is sterile, but are there that many lesbians or sterile men such that sperm is in such short supply?

Because if that is not the issue, there is this little thing called, oh, finding the right man who you would want to be the father of your children, developing a good relationship with him, preferably marrying the man, having children and then raising a family together. You know, what humans across practically all cultures have managed to get by doing for the last few tens of thousands of years?

You also have the instance where kid, or a young man could ask who his real father was and you get the instance where his parents tell him that it was some guy whole possibly died in the gutter.

There are plenty of living people to ask for donations, this is one of those somewhat creepy boundaries that people some people would definitely not like to be crossed.

I don't see any problem. If I am dead, I wouldn't care. Take all sperm you want from me.

If I have not given prior consent, no way José! And I'm not 100% sure but I know there was an idea that if the child support agency couldn't get child support from a father (dead or lack of sufficient income) the man's family could be pursued. So yeah, you might be dead but your remaining family might not be happy or able to afford YOUR choice.

You don't see a problem where a donor is suddenly contacted to pay child support until the child reaches 18 (or 21 in the UK if the child stays in further education)

This hyperbole has nothing to do with the thread.

We had a test case where the man had not expressed any kind of consent beforehand.

Not necessarily, Infinite Chaos. To me, it is little different than having a one night stand that results in pregnancy. And it stands to reason that a woman who gets pregnant using the services of a sperm bank would need child support, since single motherhood is one of the greater causes of poverty. When you help create a new human being, you are responsible for it, whether or not you wanted the child wanting it. By the way, I would contend that a woman who donates her eggs for money should also be on the hook for child support from the parents if they need financial help too.

Bottom line: If you do not want to be on the hook for child support, do not cast your genetic material upon the breeze.

This hyperbole has nothing to do with the thread.

I fail to see how stating that the best way for someone to obtain voluntarily-donated sperm is by establishing a relationship with the father is in any way hyperbolic. Again, unless one is a lesbian or is in a relationship where one's own husband is sterile, no one is entitled to sperm. And a woman is not necessarily entitled even if she is a lesbian or is in a sterile relationship, I just use those examples as plausible reasons as to not want to be in a committed relationship with the sperm donor.

The bold is what the thread is all about, not any of the other elements introduced.

Irrelevant to the thread.
