Rutland has seemingly escaped the US burger giant's attention until now, but McDonald's has set its sights on the market town of Oakham and submitted a planning application for a drive-through restaurant on its outskirts.
Resistance to the scheme is strong among the nearly 40,000 people in this traditional, conservative county. More than 50 people made official representations to the council's consultation, with comments like: "I'm proud that Rutland is the only county not to have a McDonald's." Link

Can't think of any fast food joint I would be happy deliberately go to. Wonder what it would be like living in a town without fast food restaurants and the ensuing problems of litter, anti-teenager paint and smell.
The worst one in our town was KFC - one Sunday we were really struggling to get a lunch in town and resigned ourselves to trying KFC but my daughter stayed 30 seconds in the queue before asking to leave. It was dark, dirty and smelled revolting. Thankfully they closed 8 months after opening.

Me and the missus used to travel abroad quite regularly. The longer before I saw a McDonald’s or Burger King the better I liked it. We found ourselves on a tour in St Petersburg and I was dismayed to see a Baskin-Robbins 31 flavors outlet. I don’t read Cyrillic but the color was the give-a-way..

I'll admit (with great chagrin) having eaten some of that muck many years ago. But I reckon the statute of limitations has had me in the clear for years now.

The Rutland council voted to approve a McDonalds tonight. :doh

Worst thing is when people assume this is representative of what American food is like or those who think Budweiser and Coors are representative of American beer.

McDonalds is currently hyping a vegi-burger they claim tastes like a real burger. They dare you to taste the difference between their "real" burger and a Vegi-burger.

I am not surprised to find people can't tell the difference...that's because McDonalds fat-removing, flavor-destroying process turns what was once beef into a tasteless red-dyed mush.

Sorry, there is a McDonald’s on the ground floor of the Monopol Hotel in Luzern. The menu is not the same as the US stores

“American food” is a hodge-pudge of the immigrants who settled here.

There is a British styled pub near where I live; they keep a rotating beer menu from around the world. They aren’t cheap, have decent food and also a good selection of spirits. I chat the bar staff up whenever I visit; the best selling beer is Bud-Lite.......:doh

Years ago we toured a brewery in Germany; the rep started the tour by asking what the difference was between US beer and making love on a sailboat; answer, not much, as both are ****ing near water!

When I lived in the Far East it was always a welcome taste of home when we’d find a McDonalds or a Burger King. Best find was a Shakey’s Pizza in Singapore. Most places would offer a local twist on things, like a satay burger at McDonalds in Malaysia.

Okinawa was interesting in the A&W Root Beer stands and KFC were on every corner (Minor hyperbole for effect).

American Craft beer now however is dominating

My first experience with A & W stands was a place in San Jose in 1972. Tacos and root beer, sweet!

There are just too many entries, a good German beer is at the top of my list. As I have aged, I cannot consume the volume of past years, so I am more discerning.......Wheat/Weiss beers are my favorite.

When they put a Popeye’s Chicken in on base at Kadena, the security police had to direct traffic at that intersection for the next three weeks.

Not a fan of American Fast-food chains but McDonald's in Oki was totally different than stateside and you NEVER got cold fries. I left Oki about 5 years ago and the only thing I miss more than the food and people are the beaches. I don't know when you were there but some of our favorite places to eat were HanaHou, Sauce's, Purple Flag Soba (Past Tori toward Ona Village if I remember correctly), I could go on and on!

I'd bike from Futenma to either Naha or Kadena…

Omelet Rice was a favorite as was Curry & Rice (cheapest meal on many menus).

Tip for fresh fries. Order non-salted. The salt to taste once they are delivered. ;)

Um... you enjoyed your black pudding on porridge last time you visited the UK?

No but I did manage to eat a Christmas mince pie with warm cream...not exactly an appealing name for what is a fruit cake in a pie crust.

As bad as McDonald's restaurants are in my opinion, they are nothing like the gustatory black-holes of Calcutta that UK Wimpy Bars were in the 1970s. The memory of eating only twice in British Wimpy Bars still haunt me to this day. Burgers which were deep fried in tallow, chips likewise sodden in tallow oil, vile Sardine rolls called "Torpedoes" IIRC and warm orange sodas in tiny bottles served warm (room temperature) made me almost wretch then and even now. Anything would be better than that fast-food nightmare.

That said, if folks want to keep a McDonalds out, then more power to them. Canadian Harvey's (only the charcoal grill ones) and Canadian A&Ws are much better. The only American fast food chains I really liked were Chicken Delight long ago and more recently Subway.

Cheers.
Evilroddy getting hungry now.

Without mushy peas and the whole lot covered in mint sauce, he ain't seen nuffin yet.
.

Funny enough I had Fish and Chips with British friends on the 24th of December. Now we have the same dish in Denmark, but without the mushy peas (if there are peas they are whole) and mint sauce or vinangre. Its mostly a childrens menu at restaurants [emoji57].

Well we have had the best restaurant in the world several years running... just saying. Plus "Swedish meatballs" is actually Danish.
