Rightwing parties reject proposals as lagoon city faces worst flooding in 53 years

Veneto’s regional council rejected a plan to combat climate change minutes before its offices on the Grand Canal, in Venice, were flooded, it has emerged as the city continues to battle high water levels.

Venice has been hit by recurrent flooding since Tuesday, with 70% of the lagoon city engulfed on Friday morning as the acqua alta, or high water, level reached 1.54 metres amid heavy downpours.

Idiots & hypocrites. TV last night showed the multi-billion lira sea wall system they have that has never worked to prevent just this kind of catastrophe.

The system they have is very controversial and the three gates won't won't be complete for a year or two at best. There has also been a lot of graft associated with the project.

Considering that they've been building MOSE for the last 16 years, it must all be happening under the auspices of those building the new Berlin airport.

At least that's what I tell Germans here when they sneer at Italian incompetence.
 
How long have they known they live in a flood plain these Venetians? I mean the Chinese are building islands out of nothing in the South China Sea what has Venice been doing all these centuries?

Venice has always been flooding. When I visited a house there, I noticed that there was no furniture on the first floor. The woman who owned it told me locals never put anything valuable that low because of water damage.

Yea but the claim was that it was finished.. it aint, so cant really blame the wall. As for the corruption and how long it is taking, well we agree. And dont get me started on the new Berlin Airport.

I hear the Luftwaffe is going to park its helicopters there.

Makes sense, park stuff that can't fly in an area where you can't take off (let alone land).
 
The entire Port of Los Angeles is made of man made islands that are doing just fine. Most ports have them... didn't Dubai make huge strange looking islands for multi-billion dollar hotels? The Dutch have been building levees for a thousand years... you would think that the Venetians, who have been living on some flooded islands for two thousand years would have figured something out by now.

Elon Musk wants to build a plant for cars near that airport. Seems he is a really courageous man... :D ;) - the most jokes I now have to do with this airport...

btt - the picture for me is not about what could have been done in construction, it´s about the irony the climate change denier are facing there...

I'll certainly go with corruption over incompetence for the 16 year wait for this project's completion.

Let me help you with some basic history. Venice has always flooded depending on tides. Venice was built in a lagoon and comprises of 150+ islands and mostnof the city is built on pylons. Venice has been around for such a long time, that when the first colonial settlements started in the US, the city was already 1000 years old. And finally Venice is designed around the flooding aka tides.

What Venice is not designed for is extreme tides like the one they just had. A tide that happened due an extraordinary strong storm in an area where there usually are no such strong storms.

But you lefties always preach that weather =/= climate.

Sorry, you cant have it both ways. Your weather sample size of a few storms in Venice in no way = climate
