Iranian tanker seized by Gibraltar 'photographed off Syria'

Adrian Darya 1, formerly the Grace 1, was only released on condition it did not discharge its load of 2.1m barrels of oil in Syria.

The Iranian oil tanker Adrian Darya 1 at the centre of a dispute between Tehran and western powers has been photographed by satellite off the Syrian port of Tartus, a US space technology company has said. Maxar Technologies Inc said the image showed the tanker Adrian Darya 1 very close to Tartus on 6 September. The ship appeared to have turned off its transponder in the Mediterranean west of Syria, ship-tracking data showed. The tanker, which is loaded with Iranian crude oil, sent its last signal giving its position between Cyprus and Syria sailing north on Monday afternoon.

The vessel, formerly named Grace 1, was detained by British Royal Marine commandos off Gibraltar on 4 July as it was suspected to be en route to Syria in violation of EU sanctions. Iran in retaliation seized a British-flagged tanker in the Strait of Hormuz leading into the Gulf. Gibraltar released the Iranian vessel on 15 August after receiving written assurances from Tehran that it would not discharge its 2.1m barrels of oil in Syria. However, shipping sources say the tanker is likely to try to conduct a ship-to-ship transfer with another vessel for part of its cargo after Iran said a sale had been concluded. Washington has warned any state against assisting the ship, saying it would consider that support for a terrorist organisation, namely Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard. The US treasury blacklisted the tanker on Friday.

Can't say I'm at all surprised.

I believe the Iranians have the right to sell the OIL to whomever they choose. It is not a US business/political decision.

Except under UN sanctions which is not the case

Iran had guaranteed Gibraltar in writing that the ship "was never destined to an EU sanctioned entity."

Looks like there may be sanctions on Syria.

Probably because of all the war crimes....

Oh, and Iran lied.

That isn't news. It is status quo.

Also, a ship to ship transfer, would end run any sanctions.

It's amazing to watch liberals now openly supporting terrorism ... not only within the US but also worldwide.

It's amazing to watch you support Iran. Fascinating.

So, you support the transfer of oil to a sanctioned nation?

Syria was not facing international oil sanctions preventing Iran from shipping oil to it. The EU has sanctions that apply to EU countries preventing them to ship oil to Syria, the US does as well. None of those sanctions apply to Iran shipping oil to Syria. Only if the UN. Syria or Iran applied sanctions to Iran shipping oil to Syria would that be violating sanctions. As such Iran supplying oil to Syria is perfectly legal under international law

Thank you. That clears up much.

Who tf is the EU to say who Iran sells it's own oil to? How dare Iran do their own business!!! Seriously....what a dumb**** thing to be bitching about.

The way I understand it, it's not IRAN per se selling oil to Syria, but rather the Iran Revolutionary Guard (IRG) which is under control of the Ayatollah.

Years ago, the UN had "determined"(?) several IRG members and IRG-supporting businesses as terrorists and sanctioned them and their businesses. However, the UN has neither updated the list nor enforced those sanctions in the last 10 or so years.

The US has recently "defined" (?) the whole of the IRG as a terrorist organization, subsequently putting also sanctions on businesses associated with them.
The US has determined the Adrian Darya is owned by IRG.
Iran's foreign minister said the oil is not destined for Syria.

Secretary Pompeo on twitter:
FM @JZarif guaranteed to the UK that the IRGC oil tanker #Grace1 / #AdrianDarya1 would not head to Syria. We have reliable information that the tanker is underway and headed to Tartus, Syria. I hope it changes course. It was a big mistake to trust Zarif.

So, basically, Iran covers for a US "defined"(?) terrorist organization of which members and businesses have already been "declared"(?) as terrorists and terrorism-supporting businesses.

The US can sanction Iran regarding dealing with the US, and sanction other countries dealing with Iran. It does not have the legal authority to stop Iran from selling its oil or shipping its oil to countries that choose to buy it and accept US sanctions

Okay, I can see you don't understand the difference between Iran and IRG ...

She's a Trumpist. Good luck with that.

Good grief, man. The US didn't stop Iran, it wants to stop the IRG ...

@SecPompeo
The @StateDept’s @Rewards4Justice program is offering a reward of up to $15 million for information that disrupts the financial mechanisms of Iran’s IRGC. It’s the first time the U.S. has taken such action against another gov’t entity based on their terrorist activities.

It does not have legal authority to stop IRCG shipping either

CT minded folks appear incapable of answering simple yes/no questions.

Oh, and do "good guys" gas civilians and lie about it?
