Mike Pence accused of humiliating hosts in Ireland: 'He shat on the carpet' | US news | The Guardian

The vice-president’s comments on Brexit while visiting Ireland and his stay at his boss’s golf course did not go down well

Missteps during Mike Pence’s visit to Ireland that included controversial praise of the British prime minister, Boris Johnson, have led to accusations of betrayal and “humiliation”.

One Irish Times columnist concluded that the vice-president, a “much-anticipated visitor”, turned out to have “shat on the … carpet”.

Pence's problems started with his decision to stay at the golf club for 2 nights, requiring complex & expensive logistical arrangements being made at the last - and most expensive - moment.

'The move quickly drew fire from ethics experts and political rivals.'

If this is what they're losing their **** over:

“Let me be clear: the US supports the UK decision to leave the EU in Brexit,” Pence told Varadkar in a prepared statement. “But we also recognise the unique challenges on your northern border. And I can assure you we will continue to encourage the United Kingdom and Ireland to ensure that any Brexit respects the Good Friday agreement.”

Then they were going to lose it no matter what he said about any topic, at all. Which is about par for the course.

You made a punny.

The Irish Times columnist Miriam Lord responded to a tense meeting between the vice-president and the taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, in which Pence urged the republic to protect the “United Kingdom’s sovereignty”

I expect this is more of the offending stuff that Pence did. Asking Ireland to protect the UK's sovereignty. Asking Ireland to protect the Sovereignty of the UK, which has an enclave in Ireland because Irish sovereignty was not protected

All this tells me is that Ireland has their hyperbole-loving snowflakes, too.

Quick...someone build them a safe place. Put some puppies and coloring books in there.

Yeah, I'm going to need a bit more context than this:

in which Pence urged the republic to protect the “United Kingdom’s sovereignty”. That Varadkar is gay and Pence a past champion of anti-LGBTQ legislation in Indiana also caused widespread comment.

Especially when the Irish Times column from which they're drawing the story said this instead:

Even when Pence made it worse by not only mentioning “good faith” and “Boris Johnson” in the same context but by also requesting his hosts to have “respect for the UK’s sovereignty”, Varadkar maintained a stoic courtesy.

Not "protect." Have "respect" for.

I'd like a complete-sentence quote from Pence, at the very least.

Respect or protect, I doubt either would go over very well in Ireland considering the history of respect for Irish sovereignty in the past

Trumps golf course is 185 miles from Dublin ... where Pence should have stayed.

But you know, he had to stick his Pinocchio nose ever deeper up Trumps rectum.

Shat the rug, did he then?
Good show, Pencey old chap, simply smashing!

Again, I need more context, or at the very least, a complete sentence. If all he's referring to is Brexit, then there's nothing to lose any **** over.

Of course he is referring to Brexit and the Irish backstop issue.

But going into Ireland asking them to respect UK sovereignty is probably never going to be a good idea. Some things are better left unsaid when it comes to diplomacy

If Brexit goes through, they won't need a safe place. They'll have the six counties of what is now called Northern Ireland instead.

While one needs to be aware that mentioning the current administration and diplomacy in one breath is stretching it a bit.

Difficult to read how this will go down with the general Irish American voting population on one side and Sinn Fein (and their supporters in the USA) in general.

A hard Brexit will support the IRA cause and lead slightly quicker (in my opinion) to reunification but I doubt Pence is clever enough for Machiavellian thinking on the statements made during his visit.
He simply seemed to be reading from the pro-Trump handbook.

I found his visit slightly amusing, given the media spin the Taoiseach gave to a heartfelt card sent earlier this year - which was clearly to p*** off Westminster.

So, perhaps the Irish Times can reprint Ms Kierse's grovelling card full of nonsense to Mr Juncker again about how "For the first time ever Ireland is stronger than Britain"

Perhaps that'll make those hosts feel less humiliated.

Irish woman explains why she wanted to kiss Jean-Claude Juncker

The sensible explanation is that Pence wanted US taxpayer funds (Secret Service etc) spent at Trumps Ireland golf property.

Just another method to ingratiate himself to the boss.

No, we just don’t appreciate a homophobe like Pence coming over and telling us what we should do about Brexit.
