    Of course he is referring to Brexit and the Irish backstop issue.

    But going into Ireland asking them to respect UK sovereignty is probably never going to be a good idea. Some things are better left unsaid when it comes to diplomacy
    Great job Trumpie

    If Brexit goes through, they won't need a safe place. They'll have the six counties of what is now called Northern Ireland instead.

    While one needs to be aware that mentioning the current administration and diplomacy in one breath is stretching it a bit.

    Difficult to read how this will go down with the general Irish American voting population on one side and Sinn Fein (and their supporters in the USA) in general.

    A hard Brexit will support the IRA cause and lead slightly quicker (in my opinion) to reunification but I doubt Pence is clever enough for Machiavellian thinking on the statements made during his visit.
    He simply seemed to be reading from the pro-Trump handbook.

    The vice-president’s comments on Brexit while visiting Ireland and his stay at his boss’s golf course did not go down well

    Missteps during Mike Pence’s visit to Ireland that included controversial praise of the British prime minister, Boris Johnson, have led to accusations of betrayal and “humiliation”.

    One Irish Times columnist concluded that the vice-president, a “much-anticipated visitor”, turned out to have “shat on the … carpet”.
    ==================================================
    Pence's problems started with his decision to stay at the golf club for 2 nights, requiring complex & expensive logistical arrangements being made at the last - and most expensive - moment.

    'The move quickly drew fire from ethics experts and political rivals.'

    I found his visit slightly amusing, given the media spin the Taoiseach gave to a heartfelt card sent earlier this year - which was clearly to p*** off Westminster.

    So, perhaps the Irish Times can reprint Ms Kierse's grovelling card full of nonsense to Mr Juncker again about how "For the first time ever Ireland is stronger than Britain"

    Perhaps that'll make those hosts feel less humiliated.

    The sensible explanation is that Pence wanted US taxpayer funds (Secret Service etc) spent at Trumps Ireland golf property.

    Just another method to ingratiate himself to the boss.

    No, we just don’t appreciate a homophobe like Pence coming over and telling us what we should do about Brexit.
