Boris Johnson's Brexit backstop bid rejected by EU leaders

She knows the diplomatic value of saying nothing with many words.

What she really meant (Chagos translate) was "if you can really offer a viable alternative to the backstop, bloody well let's hear it after all of these years".

Being a lady, she wouldn't follow it (not even in her thoughts) with "you bloody idiot".

The 30 day challenge she laid down, or 'blistering timetable' as BoJo (the man with the Brexit countdown clock) called it, is kinda neat, given that up to now he's planning on running down said clock without lifting a finger.

In case anyone's missed it, at the bottom of this page is all the 'fantastic work' on the alternative backstop BoJo hopes to rely on:

I skipped through the 'executive summary' and huh, a dog's dinner that makes Theresa May's dog's dinner look pretty fancy.

A common failing of those who are full of themselves is that they save so little room to absorb new information from differing perspectives. Perhaps you should bear this in mind.

I think Merkel or her advisors will have read this which is why she set him the 30 day challenge.

When I watched the briefing yesterday and heard her words, I was reminded of the German national football teams in the past who when they were passing a free ball back to the opposition always kicked it as far back and into as inconvenient a position for the opposition to start from.
The Brexiteers have been promising fantastic work and she wants to see hard evidence...

The most hilarious thing I've seen and heard after this (to be fair, only from the usual idiots) is the perception of Merkel having showed will to compromise. Interpreted in some instances by her having actually blinked.

And taken so far as to actually believe that alternatives to the back stop will be proposed solely by the EU.

With such "interpreters" providing once again proof of how stupid really can't be cured.

So Ireland by itself can block any deal correct?
Yes.

There are issues which can be passed (accepted) by the EU with a specified majority of states (representing an equally specified majority of overall EU-citizens).

Brexit-deals of whatever form are not one of those, they requires unanimous acceptance by all (remaining) 27 member states.

Ha ha I nearly added a comment about how it was like watching Millwall vs Bayern Munich (and I speak as a Millwall supporter) with our tousle-haired lump of a centre forward having the ball taken nonchalantly off him by an imperious Beckenbauer-like figure.

~ stupid really can't be cured.

Going to have to remind myself of that when I get caught up by "American" populist party supporters when they mindlessly cheer on fascist and populist groups in otherwise reasonable discussion threads.

Believe what you will. I'd be remiss, though, if I didn't point out that I'm not the one running away from the debate and proclaiming the ignorance of all who dare disagree.

You've got a point of view... I've got a different one. Neither one of us has a monopoly on fact. So where's the harm in engaging and hashing out our differences? Perhaps in the endeavor we may both learn a thing or two?
