Britain Bans Submarine Exports to Russia Over Undersea Cable Concerns

Britain has banned the export of submarines to Russia over what it says are advances that pose a national security risk, including the alleged ability to cut undersea cables which carry most global internet communications. Britain and the U.S. have warned that the Russian Navy could disrupt over $10 trillion in daily transactions by attacking the cables crossing the world’s seas and oceans. Western military experts have suggested that a secret nuclear-powered submarine hit by a fatal fire in July had the ability to probe and possibly even sever undersea communications cables. The British government’s trade agency has announced “national control” measures prohibiting the export of submarines and related equipment, software and technology to Russia.

“This additional control is a consequence of Russia developing certain capabilities — including the ability to track, access and disrupt undersea communication cables,” said the International Trade Department’s export-control unit.
“These activities represent a risk to our national security and the new control is intended to mitigate this risk,” the agency said in a statement Wednesday. Russia’s Defense Ministry has not yet commented on the latest ban. In 2015, A Defense Ministry-owned news channel had said that Russia can “both cut the special communication cables on the ocean floor and scan the signals they carry” in the event of active hostilities.

Russia is an exporter of diesel submarines and does not import any submarines, and the import of submarine parts is accordingly minimal. This ban is mostly symbolic. Russia has at least seven small research submarines that are undoubtedly used to map undersea cables and almost certainly to tap into undersea communication/data cables.

Not sure why I am so surprised, but it is rather upsetting that we are all of a sudden concerned about the security of undersea communication/data cable systems placed all over the world.

It did not occur to anyone that someone may try to disrupt or intercept these?

Not sure what, if anything, can be done to protect/secure such cables. The world is criss-crossed with these modern necessities.

A bit laughable but that's to be expected from the current British government.

The West/America does exactly the same thing with Russia, China, The EU and any other potential rival of America's ... it's just London can't kiss Washington's @rse hard enough for there own liking

And when your transatlantic cables get cut by a Russian submarine you'll be among the most vocal complaining that Washington didn't protect your comms.

i guess that the upside is that none of us will have to read the complaints.

more than likely to be the actions of the London and Washington than Moscow ... we will be more than likely buying military tech from our Russian brothers

Go ahead. The sooner you and Turkey are gone the better.

However, the criss crosses intersect at major network locations and nearshore/offshore cables at these locations increase accessible targets and potential damage. Many important cables may have already been spliced with beam splitters Covert information sharing eh?/

Satellites have made such things pretty much obsolete.
