Germany's Ursula von der Leyen nominated to lead EU Commission - BBC News

I don´t get it.... this woman is a complete fail, never did something good and always fell higher and higher. Our military forces are completely ****ed up and now she shal do the same with Europe?

The only reason I can imagine is that Orban wants a weak Eu, but why does Macron support her?

I still hope the parliament will not accept her...

you know, hope is dying at last

and I thing leaving was a silly move - nothing gets better by beeing in a snit and run away

Detroit lost half of its' population over 30 years. It's OK, the US is a single culture and highly mobile.

When half of Greece and half of Spain and Portugal joint the quarter of Italians in Germany do you think it will be OK? Will the Danes really be OK with paying for the Spanish and Greek pensions that start much earlier than theirs?

Nothing to do with lack of democracy in the EU then?

The EU is no less democratic than the UK. We are about to get a new unelected PM, to go with our unelected Head of State an unelected House of Commons.

Do you know of the `Peter Priciple'?
One thing one needs to know is that the German Ministry of Defense is a poison that any halfway intelligent politico steers well clear of.

That's why Russia won't invade.

Not for fears of any German military strength but for fears of any take-over corroding Russian administration to even beyond the point it has already reached.

The person isn't born yet who can dry out that swamp. And by swamp I don't necessarily mean corruption or any other criminal dealings. Just the well-entrenched framework in which everybody protects everybody else from their incompetence being revealed or, in the rare case of that actually happening, anyone being fired over it.

That Ministry runs itself and any elected official heads it only on paper and for cosmetic reasons.

She is a compromise candidate. You have to look at the big picture and who got what.

You also have to look at the Geo political aspect and see who remains and who is coming in.

You reckon the Heads of State currently engaged in the European horse dealings are not elected?
You should also be asking where civil servants are elected officials..

Okay stop this bull****. The pension age in Spain is 65 and in Greece it is 67. In Denmark it is also 65.

And how exactly are the Danes going to be paying for Spanish and Greek pensions? By buying up second homes in the Costa Del Sol?

Let's see..

EU legislative is the Council of Ministers and the European Parliament. Both have elected persons in them.

UK legislative is Parliament, Lords and the Queen. 2 of 3 who are unelected and the last one being elected via a system where a party with 30% of the vote has absolute majority.

So again, which is more democratic?

Don't want to confuse the already confused with too much detail.

Like von der Leyen (or anyone else for that matter) still needing the confirmation of the European parliament to seat herself as head of the commission. The commissioners themselves requiring confirmation by the parliament just as much.

God forbid mentioning how the parliament itself is democratically elected.

The irony most people in most countries have no idea who the head of the beaucracy is and have zero input on them getting thier jobs and yet in the EU there almost full transparency.... Do you know who the UK's PMs head guy running the UK beaucracy?

As I live and breathe, here we have an example of what happens when facts are unimportant to supporting an argument already decided on.

Men are not to be reasoned out of an opinion that they have not reasoned themselves into.

holy **** - now we get AKK (Annegret Kramp Karrenbauer) as defense Minister - Peter Principle really seems to work in Germany..

here people are already joking "AKK-47 "

Look at this way... it could be worse. You could be getting Boris Johnson as Chancellor...
