Groundhog Day - EU elections 2019

The collapse of the Labour vote in Scotland should give Corbyn major pause before rushing to call a GE. That's one mighty old political machine crumbled into the dust.

Labour wiped out in Scotland amid SNP surge | Politics | The Guardian

The Scottish Conservatives performed relatively better than the UK average, pointing out the Ruth Davidson issue once again.

I note that parties supporting hard Brexit were roughly equal with parties supporting no Brexit.

I exclude the Conservatives who support Brexit, although currently not hard Brexit.

I exclude Labour whose policy is to sit on the fence.

I exclude the nationalist parties SNP and PC on the advice of Professor Curtice who pointed out that although these parties support no Brexit, a decent proportion of their voters support Brexit.

Since both Plaid Cymru and the SNP campaigned on explicitly Remain positions and refer to themselves as Remain parties, you feel free to count the numbers how you wish in your reality-challenged safe space.

OK, going back to the thread title, there are growing signs "Groundhog Day" is not quite accurate (accepting however that Farage's proportion of votes under the Brexit Party banner is very similar to the one he achieved with UKIP) - and the schism against the centre is continuing quietly in the background.

  • Labour remains beset by anti-semitism claims
  • The Conservatives face islamophobia charges
  • Lord Heseltine and Lord Cooper of Windrush have been suspended by the Conservative party for voting Lib-Dem in the European elections.
  • Alastair Campbell today expelled from the Labour Party for voting Lib Dem.

I listened to Amol Rajan today on Jeremy Vine's show where the break against both parties is now happening from both ends of the political spectrum as Brexit continues to split the country. We hopefully could see the end of the current two party system or at the least the rise of a new moderate centre.

The final election result in graph form according to the European Parliament website.
