Moscow, St. Petersburg Named Europe’s Most Dangerous Cities | The Moscow Times

Moscow and St. Petersburg have ranked in the bottom 50 of the world’s most livable cities and have been named the two most dangerous cities in Europe, according to rankings from a global consulting firm. Moscow placed 167th and St. Petersburg 174th out of 231 cities worldwide in Mercer’s 2019 Quality of Living Ranking published on Wednesday. “Moscow (200) and St. Petersburg (197) were Europe’s least safe cities this year,” Mercer said in a regional breakdown. Luxembourg was named Europe’s safest city. Mercer says it considers 39 factors in categories such as "political and social environment" and "recreation” when developing its list. This year’s index was based on data analyzed between September and November 2018. Vienna has topped Mercer's index of most livable cities for the 10th year in a row. Zurich came in second, while Auckland, Munich and Vancouver tied in third – leaving the 2019 top five unchanged from last year’s rankings. The 10 cities at the bottom of the ranking were also unchanged from last year, with Baghdad ranked last, followed by Bangui in the Central African Republic and Yemen's capital Sanaa.

Moscow and St. Petersburg are Russia's two premier cities. You can extrapolate what the rest of the country is like.

Washington DC, NYC, LA, and Chicago are the USs premier cities, and they are also our most dangerous.

Doing as you suggest is a mistake.

NYC is is one of our most dangerous cities?

LOL

It never ceases to amaze me how Trumpets see the world.

Why not make a change? Use a fact book some day.

Not hardly. I've been to Russia. After you visit, then provide us with your impressions.

I haven't, I just don't want to judge a continent sized country based off 2 cities.

I've no doubt it's hazardous...poverty stricken areas always are.

Its more dangerous, than, say, Sarasota, FL. Or Greer SC. Or Shelton, CT.

Using a cities crime stats to judge an entire country seems wrong to you, doesn't it?

I was in St. Petersburg about 20 years ago, never felt unsafe, but certainly not as safe as any scandanavian city.

I really have no desire to go back there.

WTF are you talking about?

The population of Greer is less than....

Sarasota, FL. Or Greer SC. Or Shelton, CT, OMFG.

This post is clown shoes stupid.

Wait....are you suggesting that population density has more to do with crime rate than the sorta people living there?

Read the OP. It suggests that all of Russia is a crime riddled, dangerous place...because 2 of its cities are.

And you call MY post clown shoes stupid?

I doubt you would get shot there wearing a MAGA hat

Well, if it's two gemstone cities are the most dangerous cities in Europe, what does that tell you of its lesser cities?

C'mon, use a bit of rational/critical thinking here. It's not rocket science.

I lived in Moscow in the early and mid 90s. It wasn't as violent back then, but it was a complete ****hole. The rest of Russia? Not so bad.

There are only so many gangsters and so many enforcers.

Then we visited different Russia's.

Apparently so. The Russia I know is primarily good, but run and owned by gangsters.

And people haven't stood up to them.

Yet.

The Russian people are generally welcoming, curious, genuine, and hospitable.

But the dangers were attendant. From the FSB, corrupt police, mafioso, and small-time local gangs. Bribery was a requisite to get anything done.

Virtually everyone in the larger cities has a dash-cam in their car for protection purposes.

I live in Los Angeles.

I am grateful that my parents did not move to those three other cities!

Sadly, It is reported that those proverbial safe Scandinavian cities are fast a-changing. It breaks my heart, for all of my life, I have looked to Scandinavia as a model for the world.

Which Scandinavian cities are you referring to, and what has been reported about their safety?

I have read in the media (and I believe it) that there are growing instances of unpleasantness in some cities in Sweden.

Technichally london has overall higher crime than either of those cities, belarus and latvia beat is out in murder, and amsterdam and kiev barely trail those cities.

But you literally took a list that heavily relied on social and political environment as well as recreation for crime statistics, crime statistics are simply crime statistics, the fact they needed non crime factors included tells me they are full of crap and engineered the list rather than reporting it based off facts.

If the list had been accurate london would have ranked worse than either of those in safety, and they would have mentioned belarus latvia lithuania etc as more likely to be murdered with ukraine and amsterdam being safter from murder by a hair.

But you literally took a list that...

I didn't "take" anything. I posted an article about dangerous European cities from a Russian source.

You can't debunk it with citations. I get that.

How many citations do you need?

Europe: Crime Index by City 2018

I can get quite a few more, and the only site on the internet backing your op is the link in your op, no one else backs those statistics.

To make it unbelievable recreation is a consideration for most danger city. So I guess if your city had the highest murder count it cqan be the safest city of they have enough swimming pools????
