British teen who fled to join ISIS wants to return to the UK.

Meanwhile, Tareena Shakil has been released after serving half her sentence. Although her father described her as the perfect daughter - the father and Shakil's brother have numerous convictions against them (before and since) including drug dealing / county lines where they took over the homes of vulnerable people as cover for their base of operations.

Tareena Shakil: First female British Isis member jailed in UK freed from prison | The Independent

Neither Shakil nor Begum should be allowed back. If Shakil is cooperating with police then fine but with all the financial cuts and reduction in policing - this could be trouble in future.

Infinite Chaos:

So the UK can now punish citizens for their thoughts and beliefs as criminal acts?

She went and joined a proscribed terrorist organisation. Several other people have been sentenced for their membership of groups like ISIS / National Action (a white supremacy nazi group) etc etc. See above, Tareena Shakil went and did the exact same thing as Begum and she has just served (a not long enough) sentence.

This is ridiculous. The UK is literally arresting innocent citizens for using incorrect pronouns of trans people over Twitter, yet they are discussing whether leniency should be given to a woman who gladly joined a terrorist cell "because freedom"? Spare me the rubbish. I don't suppose anyone would sympathize if it was a white Nazi who joined a group notorious for capturing and torturing Jews who wanted to suddenly return back? This is PC gone madder than mad.

If she wants the best for her child she can plea to have the British government take the child back and give it the life it deserves as a British citizen. That's what any regretful and sympathetic mother would do. Who's to say she's not using the child as a bargaining chip? She could easily just choose to have an abortion when she enters the country.

Ah yes - "legal instruments". Have they ever been used? Are there actually any blood-soaked ISIS groupies actually in detention in Canada? Or would such harsh treatment offend Trudeau's tender soul?

Sweden:

Have they ever been used? Yes quite frequently, but only to date on non-citizens of Canada resident in Canada. There have been quite a few in custody recently and these Security Certificates have been around since the late 1970's IIRC. However extending their use to Canadian citizens or using other preventative detention instruments on Canadians will no doubt trigger court challenges and political backlash no matter which way the courts decide.

I don't think any of those presently in detention are ISIS militants of Canadian citizenship at this time.

I hope Mr. Trudeau has the political cojones to do what is necessary and legal to repatriate and incarcerate any ISIL militants. But I admit, I don't know for sure.

Cheers.

Rogue Valley:

If intelligence services have information which indicates that a returning individual may be a danger to Canadians or if after debriefings by skilled interrogators there is a reasonable doubt that the returnee would not be peaceable if released then there are legal mechanisms to hold returning ISIS members preventitively. In Canada there are legal instruments like Security Certificates with which to hold such returnees in detention until the authorities can either gain enough evidence to charge and try them or those authorities can come to the conclusion that the detainee does not likely present a real threat to public safety and good order.

Cheers.

That's pretty weak. A returning Syrian "refugee" (as they would portray themselves) would certainly not divulge incriminating information about their overseas activities.

Thanks for the info.

the BEST case scenario if they let her back into the UK is she starts to advocate for the sanitized version of Fundamentalist Islam...which is still Fundamentalist Islam. I cant imagine they should let her back in.

They likely will.

She was born a British citizen which means they have to let her back....because if they start denying British born citizens access to the UK based on some "we don't like what they have done/say" then you get on a very slippery slope.

Take her home and throw her in jail for what ever charge they have against her (don't get me started on that). They have done it before so they have to do it in this case as well.

Rogue Valley:

Camadian Authorities already have a pretty good idea of how many and who are the Canadian jihadis and ISIL supported operating in Syria. It's not a large number, about 27-30 I think. If any other Canadians in Syria who are not in custody request to come home, they will be examined pretty closely before being given help in repatriating.

Now if your talking about the general Syrian population applying for refugee status then things get much murkier. Canadian authorities do extensive screening on applicants for refugee status before allowing them to come to Canada. Such refugee claimants have to be sponsored by Canadians and landed immigrants already in Canada. We depend on our Syrian ex-pat communities to help us weed out the potentially dangerous applicants. If a Syrian refugee just appears at a point of entry claiming to be a Syrian refugee and there are doubts about their claim, then they are held in detention while the vetting and sponsorship process are done. It's not a perfect system but it's pretty good. We've taken in large numbers of Syrian refugees over the course of the civil war there and to date have not had any tragic failures. That tragedy may come yet but hopefully the good done for the many real refugees will out do the harm done from any sleeper militants who slip into the country clandestinely.

Cheers.

The UK allows EU citizens with criminal records to live there under 'free movement'. It can hardly discriminate against its own nationals.

Good point Crusader.

I note that whilst the UK state is ever vigilant against those committing the heinous crime of mis-gendering trans-genders, still nobody has been able to explain whether it's got its priorities right.

I suspect that increasing numbers of people will start asking this question about priorities. Is the UK government more interested in preventing the hurt feelings of a few trans-genders than it is in ensuring the security of its citizens from those who would just love to kill them in the name of Islam?

There's a meme going around that it might be best to let (FC) Cardiff City arrange her return flight.

Okay, I admit laughing at that initially but then I remembered Sala.

Sort of under "free movement" but more that EU guidance on how to restrict free movement have never been used fully.

A BETTER scenario has just played out: Begum, a Brit/Bangladeshi dual national has had her Britih nationality revoked. She is now only a Bangladeshi and will not be admitted to the UK.

She has a right of appeal, so let's delay the rejoicing for a little while longer.

Jihadi bride Shamima Begum will be quizzed by police and could be arrested if she returns to UK | Daily Mail Online

She is NOT a dual citizen and what the government has done is illegal and they have been busted twice for this very thing.

She is now stateless...

Which probably greatly cheers the majority of decent law abiding UK citizens who see no upside in accommodating a supporter of terrorists who would dearly love to kill them.

She’s not Stateless, i believe ISIS still have a small patch of land left.

Well I am wrong and truly, pleasantly surprised.

Public opinion has really changed a lot in the last few years. People saw the brutal murders of guys like Alan Henning, the multiple attacks on unarmed citizens in London, the Paris attacks, Belgium and of course the Manchester bombings.

Wrong, there are still some sandy patches left she can call home. The promised land. She can rot out their for all most of the UK care.

Or Prince Philip drive her from the airport.

Bangladesh operates "jus sanguinis" so as her mother retains her Bangladeshi citizenship this appears to be a legal process. She will probably refute any desire to go to Bangladesh but I suppose when Russian bombs start dropping nearby she will think again.

Only shame is the British Govt should have revoked her citizenship when she went to join the caliphate.

The UK Home Office are in breach of both UK and international law by doing this. Mr. Javid is stripping this young woman of here citizenship and she has no other citizenship. Thus she is a stateless person and that makes the revokation of her British Citizenship illegal. So the UK Government is willing to break the law to protect the nation from a single mother and her new-born child.

Earlier the Met Commissioner, Cressida Dick, had said Ms Begum could be arrested and potentially charged if she ever returned to the UK.

But she also acknowledged that travelling to Syria was not an offence in itself, and said the police would need evidence that she had been involved in crime or terrorism in order to bring charges.

From:

Isil bride Shamima Begum 'considering challenging' Home Office decision to revoke her British citizenship

What crime did she commit? What danger to peace does she present? When the state breaks the law in order to protect itself it's time to figure out how citizens can protect themselves from their own state.

I hope she is some how smuggled back into the UK and then forces the hand of the U.K. state. They don't have a legal leg to stand on.

Cheers?

The Nazi Party and security services were legally regarded as criminal organizations at Nuremberg.

If I were King, simply belonging to the ISIS universe would also be a criminal act in and of itself. This is how the situation is legally in Iraq.

ISIS publicly beheaded Brits. I don't blame Britain one iota for not accepting this individual back into British society.
