EU and US work on new Russia sanctions in response to capture of Ukrainian sailors

Ukrainian sailors kidnapped by Russia on 25 November 2018 and still imprisoned in Moscow.

The European Union and the United States are working on new sanctions against Russia following the capture of 24 Ukrainian sailors off the coast of Crimea, Sky News has learned. Brussels and Washington are understood to be coordinating their action to strengthen the effect on President Vladimir Putin's regime, according to European sources. "When there is common ground there is much better impact," one source said. Britain and a number of other EU allies are pushing for new "restrictive measures" to be announced by the European Union in the coming weeks, three sources told Sky News. Foreign ministers from the 28 EU member states are expected to talk about the prospect of further sanctions as part of a wider debate on the situation in Ukraine during a foreign affairs council meeting in Brussels on Monday. This follows Russia's decision on 25 November to detain the Ukrainian sailors and their three navy vessels as they attempted to pass through the Kerch Strait from the Black Sea into the Sea of Azov. The sailors remain in detention.

On Tuesday, a Russian kangaroo court ordered the sailors to remain incarcerated in Moscow's infamous Lefortovo Prison №2 until the next court date at the end of April. The three Ukrainian boats were hijacked and steered to occupied Crimea.

This is piracy on the high seas and no waters here are strictly Russian. The Black Sea is international. Navigation for the Kerch Strait and Sea of Azov are both governed by a 2003 Ukraine-Russo maritime treaty.....

Wait...I thought Trump was a Russian Asset and as such wouldn't discuss sanctions with the EU against Russia?

Trump rarely gets involved now with US sanctions against Russia except to sign off on them if required.

He took a beating the last time he missed a sanctions deadline. Sanctions on Russia are now handled primarily by Congress and White House aides.

By the above, you obviously haven't a clue about US sanctions imposed on Russia.

Is there a prize for creating multiple threads about the Kerch Strait incident?

I think everyone's wise to RV's one sided and totally partisan Russia hating commentary .

I told you before, this isn't just going to get buried. I'll remind people of the criminal Putin regime, and all his Ukrainian and Tatar prisoners.

America imposes more heavy sanctions on Russia it will be playing with fire Russia is the largest supplier of Titanium in the world without Russian Titanium sales Boeing would not be able to build civil aircraft or build jet fighters same goes for Lockheed Martin if Russia was to impose Titanium sanctions on sales to America it would cripple the US aeronautical industry, yes Titanium sales is big business for Russia but sometimes you have to take a short term hit .. even a hint on a ban on titanium sales would send US stock market into a tail spin ... it would also cripple the US air force i would also add this in for sanctions Russia could impose on America .... Russia can hurt America way more than America can hurt Russia on sanctions.

starting with a ban on sales of RD 180 rocket engines to the US, ban all over flights of Russia territory by us airliners, cargo etc, ban the sales of Boeing civil aircraft, ban all US products in sale in Russia like fast food chains, cars, coke, pepsi, Apple, Amazon, Ebay ..ban LNG gas sales to the US, as well as banning the use of the dollar by Russian companies encouraging them to use the ruble, Yuan and the Euro for trade deals and last but most importantly turn the Ruble into being backed by Russia's gold ... that would really hurt America

EU imposing more sanctions on Russia is wishful thinking on America's part ... EU have already told Pence and America today to do one on several issues including Russia

Blah, blah, blah.

Titanium is mined in Australia, Japan, and Ukraine. Russia isn't needed.

Ukraine does not extract anywhere enough Titanium for US market .... Japan's and Australia's Titanium is way more expensive .... Russia supplies 80% of both Boeing and Lockheed martin's Titanium needs .... their is all different grades .... Russian Titanium is the best grade you can get

Ukraine does not extract anywhere enough Titanium for US market.

You're daft. ~485,000 metric tons in 2017. 5th in the world in Titanium extraction.

From 1998-2005 the US sold off its entire National Reserve Stockpile of Titanium. Part of the proceeds were used to fund the World War II Memorial in Washington.

More sanctions ............ the Europeans know its a stupid self harming policy which manifestly doesn't work, and one day they just might learn to tell the US where to go.

Russia needs to stop poisoning people. Especially on foreign soil.
