Putin with Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill

he Russian Orthodox Church said on Saturday it would respond "in kind and toughly" to the Istanbul-based Ecumenical Patriarchate over Moscow's row with Ukraine's Orthodox Church. On Thursday a Synod meeting in Istanbul backed Ukraine's request for "autocephalous" — or self-governing — status and reversed the excommunication of Patriarch Filaret, who hopes to lead the newly independent church based in Kiev. Alexander Volkov, a spokesman for Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill, said the Holy Synod of the Church would "express its position" on Sunday during a meeting in Minsk, without elaborating on what measures it might take. Arriving in Minsk, Kirill told reporters: "I hope the Orthodox Church will find the strength to overcome hardships... to stay united."

The Russia of Vladimir Putin obviously believes in bondage and just cannot accept Ukraine's secular and religious independence.

In a major religious split, the Russian Orthodox Church has cut ties with the body seen as the spiritual authority of the world's Orthodox Christians. The break came after the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople recognized the independence of the Ukrainian Church from Moscow. The row is being described as the greatest Orthodox split since the schism with Catholicism in 1054. Relations soured after Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014. Many Ukrainians accuse the Russian Church of siding with Russia-backed separatists in the east. Russia sees Kiev as the historic cradle of the Russian Orthodox Church and the Church now fears losing many of its 12,000 parishes in Ukraine. Constantinople holds sway over more than 300 million Orthodox Christians across the world.

The Russian Orthodox Church does its utmost to bind states like Ukraine and Belarus to Moscow via the pulpit in Orthodox churches in those countries. That is about to change in Ukraine. The Ukraine Orthodox Church has been granted independence from the Russian Orthodox Church by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, the highest authority in the 250 million member Eastern Orthodox religion. As always, Moscow stubbornly resists any attempts by its former colonies to assert their independence and national sovereignty. Rather than accept the Ukraine ruling by Constantinople, the Russian Metropolitan Kirill I will instead follow state orders and initiate a schism in the Eastern Orthodox faith.

Russia, Ukraine, and the battle for religion | European Council on Foreign Relations

Good article by the ECFR examines how the Russian/Ukrainian Orthodox churches got to this point, what happens going forward, and how this could impact Europe.

"The Russian Orthodox Church is an ideological wing of the United Russia party" - Dmitry Gudkov, Russian opposition leader. This is more a statement of fact than an accusation. The Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) is in lockstep with the Putin regime and acts as a fifth column in the neighboring countries of Ukraine and Belarus. The final straws for Ukraine were the ROC public support of Moscow's illegal annexation of Crimea and ROC support for the Russian invasion in eastern Ukraine.
