A region in western Ukraine has decided to ban public displays of pretty much anything in Russian, claiming the move is necessary to preserve unity in the country. The authors want the ban to go nationwide. The Lvov region's legislature voted on Tuesday to impose a moratorium on the "public use of Russian-language cultural products in all forms," with 58 votes in favor, exceeding the 43 necessary. The "moratorium" is to remain in place until there is "a full de-occupation of Ukrainian territory," practically making it a permanent ban.

In addition to banning Russian songs, films, books and... whatever else, the lawmakers said they would recommend a similar ban to the national parliament. They said rooting out the Russian language was necessary "to protect the Ukrainian information space from hybrid action by the aggressor-state [Russia] and reverse the consequences of many years of Russification."

Here we go... history has not been too kind to this sort of idea no matter how well intentioned.

You neglected to mention similar Russian measures.....

Wow......... Whataboutism already!

Whatever RV's protestation, it hasn't stopped the continuing emigration of Ukrainians to Russia (the largest recipient) but also to Europe. Seems like the cultural genocide and Proshenko's monumental follies are slowly de-populating Ukraine. Still, at least it will be more ethnically pure for the neo nazi nationalists.

Got Soviet style hyperbole?

This type of thing is what let putin have a proxy within ukraine, they tried to ban all languages in public including russian and polish, and tried to oppress the russian and other non ukrainian ethnic groups. All it took for putin to do was see the writing on the wall and throw some fuel into that fire by arming the disgruntled groups.

Had they not done what they did then there may not have been a civil war, just the annexing of crimea. If all this is true they are doubling down on failure, and with the whole religious divide being pushed there as well, tripling down on failure.

It is the wrong forum to complain about. Merkel, Obama, Trump & Co launched the war against Russia and Russian people. The western folks are completely brainwashed and consider Russians as a kind of vermin cockroaches with nukes.Ukraine receives only kudos and approval from EU,USA for toughening of persecution.

The Europeans, excepting the vermin warmongers in London, are a civilised and mainly sensible people although chronically weak.

They know very well that Ukraine is full of deeply unpleasant neo-nazis, is totally corrupt, bankrupt, and de-populating faster than any country on the planet. Were it not for the Europeans total weakness, and hence forced subservience to the US, Ukraine would have been kicked into the extremely impenetrably long grass. As it is, Ukraine is only in the long grass.

Of course, if the Americans get their way and Ukraine does engage Russia, then it will be completely abandoned, it's job done, its utility served, its ultimate sacrifice to the US empire duly noted.

They know many other disgusting things but only meaning of D.C. matters.

This is just bigotry on the part of the Lvov region's politicians. The rationale is inane. If the Russian state wants to cunduct hybrid warfare they can just as easily do it in any language, Ukrainian included. This is just a reaction against all things Russian, in part created by the Ukrainian-Russian conflict and while such tribalism is to be expected in times of stress and hardship, it is no excuse for the law makers around Lvov to embrace bigotry and the scapegoating of an entire population for the actions of a few. This kind of nasty and foolish legislation plays right into the hands of the Donbas separatists and their Russian backers, turning what began as a cynical land grab into a kulturkampf/clash of civilisations which justifies all sorts of extremism. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

If the Kiev government has some sort of constitutional power to disallow these types of ill-considered laws passes by regional governments then it should use that power to stop these laws dead.

Cheers.

I believe if you examine this thread you will see that the only posters here using the word "vermin" to describe people abroad are yourself and Westphalian. Folks here are primarily angry because of what Russia has done in Ukraine (actions) and not because of who they think Russians are. There may be some old Cold War vestiges of animosity in some posters' arguments but I don't think anyone has accused the Russian people of being "vermin" or any similar term.

Cheers.

Funny how you neglected to badmouth Russia even though I provided an example.

That's why you are usually bogus. You only see what you want to see.

Rogue Valley:

You provided the the counter example and now the bad-mouthing so I saw no need to provide poisonous background vocals as part of a chorus of hate and division. You forget that I live in a Canadian province which has attempted repeatedly to legally ban my mother-tongue language from the halls of education, from workplaces and from public displays. Bigotry is not a Russian, a Ukrainian or a Québécois vice. It is a human vice which, while dividing us, also ironically shows how very similar we all are in our pettiness and xenophobia.

Have you forgotten Litwin's vile post in another thread about the Russians killed in the Syria incident?

That plumbed depths of depravity that even the usual haters stay away from.

Westphalian:

No, that is why if you read my quote carefully I limited my comment to "this thread". And to be honest, although Litwin's callousness angered me in the Syrian shoot-down thread, more often than not I ignore his barely coherent ramblings and hate-mongering.

Fair enough. I noted that you picked him up on it, for which I was grateful, and that says a lot about you in a good way.

I didn't see any of this reasoning in Post #11. All you did there was bash Lviv ..... as if one city speaks for all of Ukraine.

Why didn't you stop right there instead of demonizing everyone in Lviv in the top paragraph?

Alfons thinks Putin is too moderate and "weak" and Russia needs a Stalin-esque strongman ruler.

Very first sentence of the first paragraph of post #11 limits the comments to the Lvov region's politicians.

Are we going to continue to parse my post #11?

What you did is akin to blaming the city of Toronto or Canada for some stupid thing that Rob Ford once said or did.

It never occurred to you that this was a purely political pitch from a city mayor that is in the hunt for the 2019 election?

Geezus. Think about what you are writing.

Tigerace117:

Yes. Alfons is not alone in his advocacy for Igor (Strelkov) Girkin. Another poster has endorsed this man and gone one step further suggesting the Chechen Ramzan Kadyrov who is even more corrupt and violent than Igor Strelkov.

Both men suggested are examples of the type of leaders who would dismember Russia into their own personal regional principalities?states because they are incapable of working or unwilling to work with others and simply choose never to make compromises which last very long. I surmise we are dealing with people whose ideas closely align with very far right-leaning, ultra-violent, Russian hyper-nationalists who would rather see their country destroyed from within than get along with their neighbours and grow peacefully. It is quite tragic for the "rodina mat"/motherland and for all the sacrifices of their forefathers and mothers to protect it in its many times of peril.

Cheers.
