What would have been Russia’s first-ever gay Pride event has been cancelled within 24 hours of being announced. A gay rights activist said the celebration would be held in the village of Yablonevy, near the town of Novoulyanovsk, which has a population of seven people. Nikolay Alexeev wrote on Facebook to say he had received a letter saying the event could take place outside the town. Mr Alexeev said the mayor of the town, Svetlana Kosarinova, was “the bravest person in Russia” for approving the demonstration. He said the event would take place on 26 August and warned that the authorized number of attendees, 300, should not be exceeded. The activist said it was “the most awesome event in Russia’s history!” and called Ms Kosarinova ”a real liberal, democrat, and simply the greatest human.” However, unnamed local authorities then said the “information is not true” and stressed “we will not hold any gay parades” in a statement to the Tass news agency.

A 2013 law in Russia bans disseminating information pertaining to LGBT as “homosexual propaganda” designed to influence minors.

Yes, Russian officials still believe LGBT is a choice.

Team China/Russia/Iran has a different opinion about gays then we do...and that is OK.

Yes, and ISIS has a different opinion about gays as well, I'm glad you think that is ok.

Novoulyanovsk's mayor, Svetlana Kosarinova, had formally approved the event. But Novoulyanovsk's city manager, Gennady Denikayev, stated that the approval given for the parade by the city's mayor was invalid because the decision had been made without consulting him or Novoulyanovsk's city council. The parade was scheduled to take place in a village with only seven residents on the outskirts of the city of Novoulyanovsk. It's small-town politics that has nothing to do with the Russian government.

It isn't something I would want to go to war over or anything, but it is certainly NOT OK. Something doesn't become OK just because a government is doing it. And yes, that goes for ours as well.

So no one in Novoulyanovsk will be singing and dancing to the classic Russian Disco-era hit, "Moscow, Moscow Man!". Pity that.

Rogue Valley: Apologies for this silly interruption of a serious topic about basic human rights, but my impish side won out and I could not help myself. But if it's any consolation, that damned song (the real one) is going to be an ear-worm boring through my head for the next day or two, so I am being punished already for this childish intrusion into your serious thread.

Cheers.

You dont have the right to decide how others live, what they care about.

You have the right to make your argument, which they have the right to either listen to or ignore, as they see fit.

No, I don't. But that is exactly what the Russian government is doing and I have the right to criticize them for it.

So far as I know the Russian government is following the will of the Russian Majority, so no.

Russians get to decide how Russians live, not you.

Just as I get to decide how I live.

NOT YOU!

I agree that YOU get to decide how YOU live as long as you aren't harming others. And I don't care if 99% of the country disapproves of how you are living, it should still be YOUR choice.

There's a certain type of internet poster that is best not fed.

Fairly sure one doesn't have to explain the name given to that type.;)

I never signed up for the cult of the individual, me claiming to be a socialist was supposed to be your clue. The skirmish between the will of the individual and the will of the collective is always ongoing, and can never be allowed to get too out of whack. When one side has too much power bad things happen, as you should be able to see as you look out and see America disintegrating.

The New Chinese Empire is going to make fast work of the West I think, because the West has rotted out.

You Sir are on the wrong side of history.

I might be on the losing side of history, but I don't think I am on the wrong one. Not that history will remember me regardless of my position.

You do know regardless of local or federal politics homosexuality is against the law in russia right? Even further why is it such an outrage they make being gay against the law with a small punishment while many countries punish them to death but are somehow considered good countries.

I kind of like chatting with Hawkeye, though. :)

I get that, but you are most certainly wrong.

You do have the option of getting better.

I am afraid you are likely to be disappointed there. The older I have gotten the more I have slipped into the "cult of the individual". I have been increasingly unimpressed by the collective intelligence of the masses and the governments they put in power.

That is what conversation and collaboration are for, and to your credit you show up to DP putting up quality content while doing it with civility.

I have high hopes for you.

Quite right Hawkeye ........ good that somebody is still not brainwashed into the celebration of individuality, where literally anything goes (except being white, male and middle aged - or Russian ).

Homosexuality in Russia, unlike in many of the West's dearest allies, is not illegal. And it shouldn't be.

But there are two key issues evident here:

1. People in the West often have an overwhelming urge to impose their culture on everyone else because it's superior, or some sort of final end state of wonderfulness. Well, it isn't.

2. Russian law makes it illegal to promote homosexuality to minors. In some western societies it is promoted to minors. 'Pride' parades for example celebrate homosexuality and other strange sexualities. What are children to interpret it as - other than something to celebrate, to be proud of, to aspire towards?

Look, I appreciate that the West is currently in a politically correct love-in with 'diversity', LGBTQ blah blah, but this bizarre obsession with promoting a sterile lifestyle may well change again when common sense prevails.

Meanwhile, Russia will continue to be a tolerant but Christian and family oriented state while the small group of western states realise the errors of their ways.
