Just look at Harley, they are moving production capacity to outside of the US to not have to be hit by the import duties in Europe. That is jobs that could have been in the US but now are in another country. And that will happen more if US companies want to avoid import punishment from other countries.

And the US customers will have to pay more for their products. On top of that they are angering their allies and that will set bad blood and that is not in the US's best interest.

The trade deficit is not a problem for the US because the dollar is the reserve currency.

This whole trade deficit bull**** is purely political and is basically "the debt problem" 2.0 for the GOP. Funny how we hear nothing about the US deficit and debt now that the GOP is in the White House.....

Who cares about the deficits? China makes stuff the US could not produce for that price, the US is addicted to stuff and stuff makes shops and companies richer, not poorer. The same goes for Europe. We import loads of stuff, are we to blame that the US has stopped being a country of product producers and exports mostly services?

I am sure the EU would welcome US meat and other stuff if the US would adhere to EU regulations with regard to food safety and stops using growth hormones, antibiotics etc.

And how is that deficit going to shrink when the US will still import stuff it needs to satisfy US demand and will not be able to export as much due to US products becoming more expensive in most big markets?

The US is not in a financial bind due to deficits with trade, the US is in financial trouble because it does not TAX those it needs to tax, instead they give those who made the most even more tax breaks while pumping up the military and spending money on some stupid wall. The US economic system is poisoned from domestic issues and to some degree trade with China but cutting off the nose to spite the face like Trump is doing is a really stupid way to do business.

DUH: JUST WHY DO YOU SUPPOSE THE DOLLAR IS THE WORLDS RESERVE CURRENCY ???????????

Let me put in terms you can understand: it is like a credit card. If you pay less every month than you spend every month sooner or later you max out your credit limit.

If we buy more from foreign countries that we sell overseas, pretty soon the dollar no longer is the worlds reserve currency.

Nope.. not as long as you are the economic and political center of the world.. What Trump and his goons are doing, is pulling you out of the political center, and damaging your economic might. THAT will damage you as the world currency and will compound your problems in the short and medium term, and the most likely the long term as well. It is the end of empires.. we have seen it before and knows what happens.

I am old enough to remember when sun never set on the British Empire. That ended in 1947 when India won its independence.
I remember when only the USA had a nuke.
I remember a bi polar 2 super power world where communism was a threat.
