Russia: Norway's request for additional US Marines 'will not remain without consequences'

Russia on Thursday accused Norway of causing a spike in tensions after Oslo requested additional U.S. Marines to be stationed along the border of the two countries. The Russian Embassy in Norway called the request "clearly unfriendly, and it will not remain without consequences." “This makes Norway less predictable and could cause growing tensions, triggering an arms race and destabilizing the situation in northern Europe,” the Russian Embassy said in a statement on its Facebook page.
"We believe that security in Europe must be equal and indivisible. It can only be built on the basis of compliance with real national interests, mutual respect and cooperation," the embassy said. Reuters first reported on the Russian response to Norway's request.

Oslo is expected to ask the U.S. to send 700 Marines in 2019, Norwegian Foreign Minister Ine Eriksen Søreide said earlier this week. The additional troops would be based near the border with Russia. Norway said that the decision to invite more U.S. troops centered on NATO training efforts, Reuters reported. The U.S. initially sent Marines to the country last year to train for fighting in winter conditions. Those troops are scheduled to leave Norway at the end of the year. The request for additional U.S. forces comes amid heightened concerns over Russia's intentions in the region. Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014 in a move that was widely denounced by world leaders.

Russia invaded its neighbor Ukraine, stole Crimea and is currently fighting in eastern Ukraine. Then Moscow gets an attitude when other neighbors take measures to defend their territory, warning of consequences.

Vint Rossiya!

I'm pretty sure Trump will tell Norway tough **** and praise Putin somehow.

Trump is a tough guy with our friends and a puppy dog with our enemies. :stars:

If the US deploys more troops to the border of Russia, thousands of miles from the US mainland, which state is acting in an aggressive manner?

It's all too easy to lap up the western media perspective, but from Russia the view is very different. Think of Russian history. Think of how Russia was betrayed on NATO expansion. Think of how the US has a record of unparalleled military aggression over the last 30 years.

Why is anyone surprised that Russia would take steps to neutralise what can only be regarded as the growing threat from forward deployed US forces.

I wonder why Norway requested US troops specifically. Why not request additional NATO troops from whichever member is prepared to send them? UK? France? Germany?

Why is it the USA's responsibility to look after Norway?

Is this a new rule or something that Rogue thought up?

Read the OP. Norway specifically requested US Marines. (Oorah!)

A picture is worth a thousand words....

The deployment of US forces to Russia's borders is an act of aggression which forces a Russian response. Given Russia's history of invasion from the west, Moscow policy makers can hardly sit on their hands and rely on US goodwill - particularly given that the US lied about NATO expansion in the first place.

Neither, and let's face it, would the US sit by if Russia deployed forces to places such as Cuba (that is another historical fact).

We can't achieve mutual security in a climate of distrust and a cycle of escalation.

Doesn't line up, does it. Who told Russia that Norway had made the request? Why is it just from the Russian ambassador in Oslo that we know about this?

Oh bull****. Very few here believe such Putinista malarkey.

So if Russia deployed troops and hardware to Cuba you wouldn't see that as threatening and aggressive?

And you don't view nuclear-capable Iskander-B cruise missiles in Kaliningrad as provocative? Geesus.

That Iranian flag in your avatar is real purty, did you become a citizen?

The US doesn't have troops fighting nearby, so what's the relevance?

They are primarily for the purpose of destroying the US missile defence installation being built in Poland. This station, of which there is another in Romania, and on some US Aegis class cruisers, are / will be equipped with the SM-3 missile which is capable of being quickly adapted for offensive use, and is a breach by the US of the INF Treaty.

As always, there are two sides to every story. Medvedev warned of the possible consequences of the Polish station 10 years ago. They are well aware of the consequences.

Russia may be too nervous. Norway only invited few hundred more Marines to the region for cold-weather training. Norway agreed not to base permanent foreign forces in the country. In 1949 Norway joined NATO pledging to the USSR that it would not accept the stationing of foreign troops in the country unless threatened with attack. Last year 330 U.S. troops were invited there and it plans to more than double the number to 700.

The point is they'll be permanently based in Norway - but they'll rotate bases (thus making a mockery of Norway's commitment whilst abiding by the strict letter of it).

This is all a small piece in the larger jigsaw of NATO's growing aggression and threat towards Russia - the consequence of which will be only to increase Europe's insecurity.

Do you ever read the papers? You might want to start.

What was the excuse before they decided to befriend Poland so closely it made Kremlin jealous?
