German Envoy Sees U.S. Sanctions Likely Over Russia Gas Pipeline

Germany should brace for U.S. sanctions over the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project with Russia, signaling an escalation of economic conflict with Europe, according to an envoy of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s government. Peter Beyer, the German government’s coordinator for trans-Atlantic relations, said in an interview that an official in President Donald Trump’s administration told him at a meeting in Washington last week that sanctions related the Baltic Sea pipeline are likely. “This is a further burden for the trans-Atlantic relationship,” Beyer told Bloomberg Television on Friday. Nord Stream is meeting resistance across the political spectrum in Washington, including in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives as well as the White House, he said. Sharpening U.S.-German conflict over Nord Stream 2, which would expand the direct flow of Russian natural gas to Germany, is adding to points of contention including trade, defense spending and the Iran nuclear accord. Merkel and President Vladimir Putin are expected to discuss the pipeline’s future during a meeting in Sochi, Russia, on Friday.

U.S. action would put companies in Austria, France, Germany and the Netherlands at risk. Royal Dutch Shell Plc, BASF SE’s Wintershall unit, Uniper SE, OMV AG and Engie SA are partners of Russia’s Gazprom PJSC in the project. Beyer said the administration official, whom he didn’t name, pointed out that the U.S. has authority to sanction Nord Stream under legislation passed last year targeting Russian energy projects. The Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act, or CAATSA, was a response to Russia’s intervention in Ukraine and its suspected U.S. election interference. German Economy Minister Peter Altmaier, a Merkel ally, told ARD television the U.S. should expect that Europe “will define and fight for our economic interests,” including Nord Stream 2. Beyer presented a grim picture of relations with the U.S., saying the combination of tensions with the Trump administration is taking a toll.

Although I understand the current economics of Russia's Nord (North) Stream 2 for Germany, situations change as the world saw with Russia's invasion and illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014, and Russian military operations in eastern Ukraine that have killed 10,000+, wounded 20,000+, and displaced 1.5 million since 2014. The Merkel administration is setting Germany up for future energy blackmail by the Kremlin.

Europe needs the gas.

If Trump pushes the issue, expect things to go downhill fast.

This one's going to be interesting to watch, thanks for the post.

The US imposing sanctions on Germany would have a gross overstep. I'm thinking it wouldn't be long before sanctions are imposed on the US. I wonder what that would look like. Friends of America are disappearing faster than WH staff...maybe you guys wanna reign in some of that "genius" foreign policy your boy is doing on your behalf. You look at it all at the same time, and it's looking a bit ugly for you guys right now.

Putin Seeks Common Cause With Merkel Over Trump

Putin wins thrice:

1) He maintains his monopoly over supplying Europe with heating gas ... a political blackmail lever as we witnessed in 2014.

2) He uses the Nord Stream 2 issue to drive an even wider wedge between Europe and the US.

3) He then takes advantage of this wedge to soften/weaken the EU stance on EU sanctions against Russia for Crimea/eastern Ukraine.

Putin will also take advantage of the current Trump/Europe divergence regarding the Iran nuclear deal.

i'll think you'll find it's America driving the wedge it started it in 2008 in Georgia encouraging Georgia to invade South Ossetia and Roki tunnel to see how fast the Russians would react killing dozens of Russian UN peace keepers in the process ... but what really set it of was Putin's proposal to start a Lisbon to Vladivostok free trade zone this set alarm bells ringing Washington and plan B was hatched colour revolution #2 in Ukraine with the help of Neo nazi groups knowing Russia would respond.

For some unknown reason America seems to think it owns Europe and thus gives it the right to tell us what to do .... sorry your wrong ... i hope America does hit the EU with sanctions we will only hit you harder ... the EU is not Iran and cannot be isolated as such, the English (Scotland will be leaving the UK/Britain) may continue to dance to the American puppet master , the EU will no longer dance to your tune.

America is a bully and Scots don't like bullies ... you laugh the Scots ... yes we may be a small country but Scots have been credited for building the modern world with our inventions and Scientific discoveries ... and we are still inventing and making important discoveries though we might not decide to share them with America in the future

the EU should also end all deals using the US dollar

Trump could make that happen, and that would be quite bad for the economy to lose reserve status.

But, having said that, things would have to get quite bad for people to be willing to disrupt the global economy.

imposing sanctions is akin to declaring war, and in war the gloves come off .... Trump is playing a dangerous game
