Putin Signs Internet Libel Bill Into Law

4/24/18

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed new legislation allowing authorities to block websites that publish defamatory information about public figures. The Internet libel bill swiftly passed the State Duma this month, two years after high-profile court cases ordering news outlets and opposition figures to remove corruption investigations from their websites, although Duma deputies have not explicitly linked the two. Putin’s signature and the law’s publication on Monday allows offending websites to be blocked within a day of a court order “for failure to remove information discrediting the honor, dignity, or business reputation of a citizen.” The anti-defamation law came into force a week after the Russian state regulator Roskomnadzor began blocking the Telegram messaging service, causing disruptions across various unrelated online services.

Basically, anyone criticizing the Putin regime or its officials can be silenced and arrested via labeling valid political criticism as libel which is criminalized.

On another note, the Russian government has so far banned the encrypted Telegram app, Google, Amazon, and 18 million other IP addresses from Russian browsers. The Kremlin is preparing for war and setting things up so that it can turn off the outside Internet at any time, leaving Russians with only state-owned information choices (disinformation/propaganda).

Looks like Putin shares Trump's concern about "fake news."

Honestly, I think this makes him look terribly weak. He must be worried that the internet is becoming a threat to his mafia rule.

In the U.S., it's MORE DIFFICULT to prove defamation against public figures, exactly because it is so important to expose corruption. There are few, if any, countries in the world more corrupt than Russia, and this will only allow Putin to steal more than the billions he already has from his own people. There are few people, let alone leaders, more sick and twisted than Putin, yet our POTUS thinks he is a great guy and a model leader. I don't for the life of me understand why that alone is not utterly disqualifying.

It's actually the same as here in the USA where they are proposing to block 200 Prop200 websites and label them CT. Is it OK in the USA?

Sure when you try to absurdly compare that above list of cloudflare, Amazon, etc. to political conspiracy theory individual web sites...that would be just as foolish and unethical.

If you can ban CT's you can ban Amazon.

It shouldn't be OK; not by a long shot. Every American citizen should be against this kind of thing because the government taking your ability to dissent is the road to disempowering the citizenry.

it's a season of despotism. i hope that i live long enough to see that reversed.

And yet this is a discussion about should, not can. Anything can be done. What should be done (and just as importantly why) is the question.
