Leak May Put Brakes on Putin’s European Pipeline Dominance
Gazprom chief Alexei Miller (L) poses with former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder (C) and Isabelle Kocher, CEO of French power group Engie
EU economic power Germany is trying to push through the Russian Nord (North) Stream 2 gas pipeline to Europe. Germany will benefit financially because Moscow has given Germany preferential prices of gas at the expense of European countries such as Poland, Romania, and the Baltic States whose delivery price is almost double that of Germany. This arrangement violates EU monopoly and anti-trust laws. In addition, Nord Stream II will be a cudgel Moscow can use to punish its former Warsaw Pact captive nations and drive a wedge between European regions.
Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroder is now a lobbyist employee of the Russian energy giant Gazprom and a Putin favorite.
