French far-right leader Marine Le Pen charged over IS photos

French far-right presidential candidate, Marine Le Pen

PARIS (AP) — French prosecutors filed preliminary charges Thursday against Marine Le Pen for tweeting brutal images of Islamic State violence. The prosecutor's office in the Paris suburb of Nanterre said the charges were issued for "distribution of violent images." If the case eventually reaches trial and she's convicted, Le Pen could face up to three years in prison and a 75,000-euro ($90,000) fine. Le Pen's December 2015 tweets showed executions by IS extremists, including the killing of American reporter James Foley. She posted them in the wake of the November 2015 IS attacks on Paris, accusing the government of not doing enough to protect France. Le Pen told BFM television Thursday "it's clearly aimed at silencing me. Yet I will not be silenced". Le Pen said she would consider a potential conviction as a "medal of patriotism and defense of the French people."

The preliminary charges were made possible after the French parliament lifted her immunity from prosecution in the case late last year. It's one of multiple legal cases targeting Le Pen or the National Front. In one high-profile investigation, she and the party have to respond to charges over the misuse of European funds. She denies wrongdoing. Le Pen, who was a distant runner-up to Emmanuel Macron in last year's presidential run-off, plans to propose a new name for the National Front at a congress later this month, in an apparent effort to distance it from past problems and stigma.

Le Pen's far-right Front National Party of France is partly funded by the Kremlin.

A woman is arrested and faces prison for distributing real photos of ISIS executing people and illustrating the real world threat they present...and you focus on "the rusians!!! the russians!!!!"

****ing brilliant. I can only assume you want their version of speech laws to come to America soon.

Seems you can't decipher the obvious ... France has different laws than the US.

Everyone should know which European political parties are partly or fully funded by the Kremlin.

Oh I decipher just fine. A woman is jailed on a free speech issue for posting facts about a brutal group that presents a real world threat (sure...our laws are different) and all you can focus on is "the russians!!! the russians!!!"

****ing pathetic.

Considering that ISIS is on the run, I consider Russia's attempts to spread chaos and undermine our election system to be a greater threat.

Wait, she was charged for showing the reality of ISIS violence and your concern is "the russians"?

You can't make this **** up, wow. You need to check your priorities.

Would you be for the arrest and charges for a politcal candidate in this country for showing islamic violence?

Your position supports fascist ideology.

She broke the law. She knew what she was doing. If you don't like the law of the land, move, right? With ISIS on the run, what exactly was she going off about anyway? Sounds like a **** disturber to me.

So, with that out of the way, in an explicit effort to explain how Russian interference is more concerning that a defeated ISIS so as to discourage wildly emotional outbursts about my priorities...why IS Russia trying to stir **** up all over the world? Is it possible to be concerned about both things? Is it weird that I think the entire world is sitting in those blissfully ignorant moments right before Russia pulls all our pants down? And why do we care about a defeated enemy on the run, who's military capability was limited to swap meet arms, while being pissed off at people who are concerned about the guys with more nukes than anyone?

Strange days...

You still can't read. She was charged, not jailed. A trial will decide her guilt or innocence. God damn you're hopeless.

There are two "real world threats" in the rest of the world.

1) What remains of IS and their plans for a caliphate and to cause terror

2) the continued undermining of European democracy and funding of populist demagogues and ideologues.

I can accept that what Russia does to our democracy and politics is of no concern to many Americans but please don't come telling us to ignore the threat that Putin's Russia poses.

If you really wish, we can explore the nuclear and military threat to nations vs the threat of isolated terrorism and see which is intrinsically greater?

While I despise Marine Le Pen, her father and the Front National, this is clearly a case of politically driven prosecution. Last November the French Parliament retroactively revoked Le Pen's paliamentary immunity in order to allow these charges to be pursued in court. The Front National and key members are being likewise targetted with a wave of litigation, both civil and criminal by the French establishment which wishes to suppress the far-right legally rather than trounce them politically.

This is very dangerous stuff and despite her abhorrent views and agenda, which should be crushed by discrediting them politically, France is politicising the rule of law and using the courts as an instrument of political coercion against Mdm. Le Pen and her allies. That is never a good strategy as it feeds martyrdom notions and grows the underdog aspect of the cult of personality around such political leaders; nor is it a legitimate project in a democratic society. C'est tellement fou, alors!

Cheers.

One of Le Pen's Twitter photos showed American journalist James Foley’s decapitated body and Foley’s family issued a statement saying they were “deeply disturbed” by the politician posting the images for political gain. The charges for circulating "violent messages that incite terrorism or seriously harm human dignity" carry a potential punishment of three years in prison and a fine of 75,000 euros ($91,000). I think Le Pen will get away with paying the hefty fine without a jail sentence. Twitter should have deleted these ISIS photos for violating the terms and Twitter has suspended 376,890 accounts for posting terrorism-related content. Le Pen indirectly contributed to the terrorist group's propaganda.

Wasn't she invited to speak at CPAC? Figures!

Yep. Also Nigel Farage, Frank Gaffney. Along with a slew of neo-Nazi, white nationalists, alt-right members and leaders.

Well, the GOP likes to boast they're a "big tent" party. I'd just hate to be trapped in that tent!

Thanks, but I don't need your lectures. It's a French problem.

My interest here is letting folks know that Marine Le Pen is a Putin stooge. In 2014 a Russian bank loaned her Front National party €9 million. Le Pen pleaded for another €12 million from Moscow in 2015. A Russian hacker group (Shaltai Boltai/Humpty Dumpty) published emails between two Russian officials (Prokopenko/Rykov) expressing support for additional money for Le Pen on the condition that she support Moscow's illegal annexation of Crimea. She did and promised to vote against EU sanctions if elected. When Le Pen didn't personally visit Crimea after a public Moscow invitation, Russian banks withheld the €12 million tranche. Le Pen is a far-right racist and anti-Semitic scumbag.

Rogue Valley:

If it's a French problem then why are you dragging Putin's Russia into it. It is clearly not a "French problem" but an international one. If Mdme. Le Pen and the Front National broke French campaign financing laws then they should be prosecuted for that. If French political parties getting loans from foreign banks is legal under French law then change the law. But using retroactive laws to strip a politician of legitimately granted immunity in order to pursue non-related charges is political chicanery and prosecutorial abuse no matter where it occurs. This is the kind of crap that the Putin regime does regularly to hamstring political opponents. It has no place in a state governed by the rule of law and by a state calling itself a functional democracy.

As for your "interest here" that is your interest, not mine. You are free to pursue your interest but on a public forum so are others. My interest lies in protecting the rule of law and functional democracy and not to excuse, endorse or passively standing by while French politicians are mimicking the tactics of a despotic Russian regime in order to defeat its influence abroad. We clearly have different interests, but we can still coexist.

Cheers.

If you want to editorialize on the evil of France's free speech laws, but all means have at it.

But you don't get to supervise/regulate my thoughts and motivations in a thread that I created.

A thread you 'created', eh. Some mopes round here might just start a thread; it takes a special kind of visionary genius to 'create' one. I hope this thread will now not just be moderated but artisanally curated.
