Debate has been swirling in France over the fate of women who went to Syria to marry Islamist fighters and now find themselves in custody, not least following heavy defeats for the Islamic State group.

This week Emilie Konig, a 33-year-old Muslim convert from Brittany who became a notorious jihadist recruiter, became the latest of a string of European women to plead publicly for repatriation.

A policeman's daughter who converted after meeting her first husband, Konig set off for Syria in 2012, leaving her first two children in France to join her new partner, who was later killed.

She frequently appeared in propaganda videos and French intelligence intercepted messages to her contacts at home urging them to attack French institutions or the wives of soldiers.

I believe that every single person on this planet should be the citizen of a nation, and that this nation must always allow them to come home.

Konig tried to influence Muslims into murdering the wives of French soldiers, and now she wants to go 'home' to France. She chose her home already, it's with her fellow Isis members in Syria. Saying 'oops, my bad' doesn't cut it in my opinion.

I voted "I don't know." Presumably, the French should follow their own laws. My personal belief is anyone who commits treason should be tried end executed or, at least, locked up and have the key thrown away. Trying her in Syria kind of reminds me of Gitmo, which, frankly, isn't such a bad idea.

That is what jails are for.

Precisely, so she can sit in a jail cell in Syria, and not cause the French anymore trouble than she has already. She has broken Syrian laws as well, and shouldn't be excused from that just because she was born in a privileged country like France.

I was reading that the Iraqis are killing almost everyone, which I dont agree with....sitting in an jail in Syria is fine if there is a functioning justice system, otherwise they should be sent home for France to deal with the crime(s), and France should be forced to step up and do their duty.

France routinely botches terrorism cases in their judicial system. One terrorist was given 2 months in jail for shooting at French police with an AK-47. If flown back to France, Konig is likely to remain a threat, and may attempt to radicalize other women in prison.

I say let the Syrians deal with her. They haven't forfeited their cajones yet.

France should do whatever they wish to do.

If this were an American asking to come back to the US it would depend.

Did she do anything that cost American lives? If yes then give her a choice. Stay where she's at or come back and face murder charges at most, conspiracy to commit murder at least. If she ever does come back and is caught then charge her with the appropriate crimes.

Did she support fighting against the US? If yes then again, give her a choice. Come home and face treason charges or stay out of the US permanently with citizenship stripped.

She made her choices. Now she must live with the consequences.

If they committed no crimes? Yes.

I read a book of women kidnapped by Muslim extremists from the Phillipines and the kidnappers used all sorts of coercion and threats against those women, who did what they needed to to save their lives.

If they committed crimes/violence against others then I would say their cases should be examined individually with their circumstances taken into consideration. (See: Patti Hurst)

I don’t know. I understand the sentiment of not wanting to let them back but if France is the only country in which they have citizenship then I think they should be repatriated. If they broke laws then charge them.

Konig left her first two children in France and then voluntarily went to Syria where she frequently appeared in propaganda videos and French intelligence intercepted messages to her contacts at home, urging them to attack French institutions or the wives of soldiers.

If "there are legal institutions capable of guaranteeing a fair trial assuring their right to a defence", women arrested in Kurdish-held Syria should be "judged there

That's my position.

Well, she supposedly appeared in propaganda videos, which I'm pretty sure would be a crime in the U.S., so bring her back and charge her, and after she's served her time set her loose.

C'est la vie.

Based on the article, it appears that France is advocating for a fair trial for this ex-patriot. I'm not French so I won't presume to tell them what they should or shouldn't do but I certainly wouldn't be supportive to give any consideration to ex-American's that did what the article is claiming this French woman has done. Personally I think it's pretty clear that she has no loyalty except to herself as she already abandoned two of her children from her first marriage.

Terrible situation for the children involved.

So what's the beef here, considering that France doesn't really want her anyway?
