Mr Navalny was seen as the only candidate with a chance of challenging President Putin

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has been formally barred from competing in next year's presidential election. The Central Electoral Commission has said Mr Navalny was ineligible because of a corruption conviction which he says is politically motivated. He has urged his supporters to boycott the March vote. Mr Navalny, 41, was widely regarded as the only candidate with a chance of challenging President Vladimir Putin. "We're declaring a strike by voters. The procedure that we're invited to take part is not an election," Mr Navalny said after the decision, adding that he would lead protests across the country. Known for his anti-corruption campaign and protests against Mr Putin, Mr Navalny was given a five-year suspended sentence in a retrial earlier this year on embezzlement charges.

Reacting to the widely expected decision, Mr Navalny said the case was intended to block him from "speaking the truth" about the situation in Russia, and that barring him from running would deny millions of Russians their vote. "Only Putin and the candidates that he personally chose, ones who don't pose the slightest threat to him, are taking part [in the vote]," he added. Mr Navalny was first sentenced in 2013 accused of embezzling timber worth 16m roubles ($500,000; £330,000) from the Kirovles state timber company while working as an adviser to Kirov's governor. The verdict was quashed by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), which said he was not given a fair hearing. A retrial earlier this year gave him the exact same sentence. Mr Putin is seeking a fourth term that would see him become the longest-serving Russian leader since Joseph Stalin. He still retains a massive approval rating and is almost certain to ease to victory in the election.

Democracy ... Putin style. Either have the opposition candidate murdered (Boris Nemtsov) or ban any significant opposition candidate from the election.

I wonder if Trump will attempt to help his friend Putin to return the favor?

Putin has no real election challenger. So far his 'competition' is Russian Reality TV star (think Paris Hilton) Ksenia Sobchak, the daughter of the deceased (2000) Anatoly Sobchak. You see, when the USSR fell apart, KGB Lt. Col. Vladamir Putin returned to his hometown of St. Petersburg from East Germany. He was provided a job in the administration of St Petersburg mayor Anatoly Sobchak. Sobchak took Putin under his wing and taught Vladimir all the tricks of political corruption. Although they won't admit it publicly, Putin is Ksenia's Godfather. She has been vetted for the election by the Kremlin. They consider a female opponent a nice modern touch for this election.

yes - Putie will win going away with no real competition.

The Russian election comission, aka DNC east, won’t allow him to run because Putin is the anointed one, not him.

It is Trump who fawns over Putin and the Russians, not the R&D Congress.

You should pay more attention to the news. Trump is laying sanctions and pulling embassy staff and following what Obama started to punish Russia for invading Crimea. He is also in process of supplying anti tank weapons to Ukraine.

Fawn on that.

Although he is currently polling at around 2%, Navalny says he would defeat Putin in “honest elections” if he were allowed to freely promote his anti-corruption policies.

The Kremlin critic, who is barred from state television, has been jailed three times in 2017 as he campaigned across Russia in a bid to force his way onto the ballot. He was also nearly blinded when a pro-Kremlin activist threw a chemical into his face.

While Navalny is a celebrated hero in the eyes of the Western media, he not a serious contender in the presidential election as his meagre poll number suggests. Alexei Navalny is a social justice activist with a massive online following but he could not even qualify to get on the ballot in previous parliamentary elections. Navalny was also associated with the skinheads in Russia, which is a disqualifying factor. His party formed a coalition with the Movement Against Illegal Immigration (MAII), which was declared extremist by the High Court of Russian Federation and banned in 2011.

On June 23, 2007, Navalny co-founded a new political movement, named "The People", which upheld the positions of "democratic nationalism", defined as a fight for democracy and the rights of ethnic Russians;[42] according to a Navalny's biographer, Navalny differentiates the ethnic and social aspects of the term, highlighting the latter.[46] (In Russian, "nation" is commonly defined as a social term, while "nationality" is seen as related to ethnicity.)

In June 2008, the movement joined forces with two other Russian nationalist movements, Movement Against Illegal Immigration (MAII) and Great Russia, to form a new coalition, Russian National Movement. Navalny declared the movement would participate in the next parliamentary elections, planning to get a great share of votes; he added, "up to 60% of the population upholds spontaneous nationalism, but it is not legally effectuated".[47] Later the same month, the MAII and The People signed a cooperation agreement; at the procedure, he defined the "new political nationalism" as democratic, "fundamentally and statistically", adding, "we can teach blatant liberals a thing or two". He also declared he wanted to distance the coalition from the skinheads, calling for close collaboration with the leftists and the liberals for fair elections the coalition "would win", and demanded for political liberalization and early parliamentary elections in Russia.[48]

That's because there is virtually no independent media in Russia. Putin's regime vets all political competition. That's why his competition for this election is his Godchild ... Ksenia Sobchak.

You'll have to provide a credible citation. Sounds suspiciously like Kiselyov propaganda on Rossiya 1.

I've been to Russia many times and have never heard of Navalny associated with the DPNI (the Russian acronym).

First, it is not worth to believe Russian statistics, which shows sky-high figures in Putin's support for voters.

Secondly, a new challenger appeared on the stage, who was not taken seriously. This is Pavel Grudinin a leader of the collective farming enterprise, bearing the name of Lenin.

The evidence of that this challenger can create competition to Putin is proved by the fact that the pro-Putin propaganda machine recently pours out a heap of compromising material on Grudinin, although before these mass media were loyal to him.

Navalny is representative of Kremlin national -state tower , actually Putin is too, but doest want to brake apart empire that's why pynia supports today more the imperial tower. for how long it takes before Kremlin national -state tower takes over the imperial tower i dont know less than 10 years for sure. Muscovy is in very bad shape , czar Kadyrov is stronger day by day , + China is not joking around Belarus, central Asia, wars in Ukraine and Syria could kill empire any day

Recently, the spokesman of the Russian president, Dmitry Peskov, said that Putin is the most capable and talented world leader. But I have just a one question - talented in what? In robbing your own people?

After all, it is known that this leader along with his domineering group withdrew from Russia, according to various estimates, from 1 to 2 trillion dollars.

Or, maybe this talent lies in inciting and organizing conflicts everywhere along the Russian borders - in Transnistria, Abkhazia, North Ossetia, in the east of Ukraine?

Certainly, Putin has some advanced abilities. Say, how talented he stole from Ukraine part of its territory, annexing the Crimea peninsula.

Of course he and his entourage know very well how to lie on any political topics. And they are doing it so talented. Take, for example, the statements of the Russian side about the Budapest Memorandum, where the Russian side said that by signing this document, Russia pledged only "not to attack a nuclear strike against Ukraine."
Although it is clearly written in black and white that the United States, Britain, and Russia guarantee the territorial integrity of Ukraine in exchange for the refusal of the latter from its nuclear status.

And even Putin's nomination for a new presidential term is unconstitutional, since the constitution provides only two presidential terms for one person. But he managed to cheat his citizens even here.

To lie always and in everything it is the true talent of the president and presidential candidate of Russia Vladimir Putin.

The president has the right and power to declassify any information that he see's fit. Especially when its on information that can help save lives.

This fawning BS is child splay.

THIS president also equated our intelligence agencies (FBI/CIA/NSA) to Nazis. Fawn on that tidbit.

Which was his opinion and looking at how Obama decided to abuse his power, such a distinction isn't too far off.

Still not worrying about this whole fawning thing, as your point is still rather hollow.

Guys, I would like to recall that the topic is about the election of the Russian president, not the American one.
