Doner kebabs under threat as EU moves to ban key ingredient | The Independent

Is doner a goner? Kebabs could be banned under EU plans to combat heart disease

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2...liament-threatens-to-make-doner-kebab-a-goner

EU rules could see kebabs banned | Daily Mail Online

It even went viral on Facebook and spread to places like Denmark.... where our journalists first fell for it, until they fact checked the story. Even the Danish version of the Daily Mail is backtracking big time at the moment.

The truth is somewhat different and more boring..

As the Independent states...

EU politicians are moving to ban phosphates, necessary to keep seasoned kebab meat moist, citing health concerns based on studies linking the additive to heart disease.

False.. it is already banned to add EXTRA phosphates and some one within the EU system proposed to change that ban. Basically what it means is someone wants to be allowed to pump extra phosphates (water basically) into the Kebab meat to make it even more moist, but the EU food agency is presently conducting a review on how it effects food and humans, and so far the results are not good for allowing the change. A Danish MEP Christel Schaldemose wrote (in Danish yes..) an editorial exposing the hypocrisy. You can read it here.

The Kebab as we know it today is totally safe and totally full of natural phosphates, and is not being touched.. and yet the poorly informed journalists are pushing another narrative and not fact checking. It has as of yet not been corrected on most English news sites.. the Danish ones are starting to correct their stories... but the damage is done.

So no wonder people have issues with the EU, when false stories like this are not only being promoted everywhere, but are not corrected when the actual facts come out.

That's quite right. The kebab thing was widely and loudly repoerted on Germany's public media and venues like Spiegel all day, till it suddenly went quiet, got a soto voce correction and disappered from reporting. Someone in an interview asked why, if the phosphates were dangerous, they were allowed to be in so many products. In any event, the story is in the heads and hearts that the EU was either sloppy not to have made the ruling right or that the EU wants to take kebab away from the People. That is good, because nobody is any longer thinking of the main question anymore. That was a close one. ;)

PS: The interviewee also reminded that the local tale seems skewed and added the reminder that the USA allowed much lower NOx emissions than the EU and continuously broke them over years in many many automobiles and cities. But she was a Green and was onto her own agenda.

Germany has got plenty of great kebab places. The one time I went there I was eating either sausages or kebabs, the latter is healthier than the former.

Welllllll... depends on the sausages :) Kebab meat is quite fatty, and depending on the sauces you add, the amount of calories can be quite high...

But kebab > sausages as a hangover food.

I use stew meat when I make kabobs, but have found BEER is the best moisturizer and tenderizer of them all.
I am sorry if this does not fit into the discussion. I just thought it made for an easier and less controversial solution.
The day the EU bans BEER will be....never.

That is why it was such a great story for breakfast shows and morning news. Germans love their kebab known as Döner. The story goes that it is not Turkish but German and invented in Berlin.

True, but if you do not eat at least some sausages on a trip to Germany, one is missing out.
Ditto for the wonderful way they make some potato dishes too.

Name one German sausage thats healthy, vegetarian sausages dont count. :2razz:

Kebab meat isnt fatty at all, they are sliced, solid chips of meat. Granted, too much sauce might be unhealthy, but nobody would be dumb enough to drown the kebab in white sauce.

Reminds me (even where not at all comparable) of the clownery that the Boris would engage in when he was still working for the Telegraph in Brussels.

From EU sniffers invading UK farmyards to ensure that Euro-manure smells the same to standardisation of condom sizes, he
"was sort of chucking these rocks over the garden wall and I listened to this amazing crash from the greenhouse next door over in England as everything I wrote from Brussels was having this amazing, explosive *effect on the Tory party – and it really gave me this, I suppose, rather weird sense of power,”

Admittedly I was holding my sides with laughter at the time, not so much at the childishness of his pranks but at the gullibility with which the press (and thus the public) lapped it all up.

But this clown is now in the cabinet, despite his juvenile antics having long since turned to lies that brought far more dangerous consequences on account of large parts of the British public appearing to learn nothing.

Germany is certainly the country I found the greatest number of different and wonderful sausages. Italy had the tastiest and choucroute in the Alsace is a must try, if you go to Colmar for the art.

Well, that's the whole point of eating them, isn't it? Who the heck wants "healthy" when stuffing oneself with a German sausage?

Although I wouldn't advise anyone to go visiting there right now, the German version has nothing on the real thing that you get in Turkey.

But I agree that the Döner meat you get in Germany isn't particularly fat, even where the original demand that it be lamb is no longer adhered to everywhere.

"Choucroute" is Sauerkraut.:lamo

Okay, the "garnie" version involves sausages but also other meats but choucroute on its own is nothing other than pickled cabbage.

Of course if you order "choucroute" anywhere in the Alsace, you'll get not only a plate of cabbage. I recommend ordering "choucroute royale" where the cabbage is braised and served with an assortment of meats that'll have your cholesterol sky-rocketing.

Oh. I am so sorry. I had forgotten you were her. Of course, my French friends refer to choucroute garnie simple as choucroute. Knowing you, yours are probable careful to be more formal. ;)

Choucroute was also the name given to the hairdo that Brigitte Bardot wore in the 60s. My French friends might have been inclined to put her on the menu, but certainly not for dining on her scalp.

It incidentally takes its name from "Sürkrut", the Alsace pronunciation of the German Sauerkraut. Beyond speaking French, they sport a German dialect there that's also prominent thruout the South West of Germany.

God I do hate sauerkraut. Mom used to make it all the time which may explain my early aversion to veggies (except potatoes) when I was a tyke.

Real German sausages have almost more meat in them, than Kebab meat has :)

When wanting to regulate to stop harm coming to their citizens, the EU suddenly becomes this pariah that is stifling industry.

The parochial British on the other hand have no qualms about 'experimenting' on their citizens and calling it an Industrial Revolution.

We should have the confidence to say, we are a big marketplace and, you trade here on our terms. We own the means!

Never ever claimed that Windows was the safest OS of all time....

But lets be clear here.. there are a A LOT of different German sausages... full meat sausages are relatively more healthy than Kebab meat, that has a lot of fat in it (that is the good stuff!!!!).
